Descriptions of Spring Intensive Offerings

Step In, Step Up-Domestic Violence Prevention - Elective
Between gender stereotypes, media, and misinformation about relationships, we’re swimming in a lot of stuff! Let’s sort through it together! We’ll take a closer look at our culture, ourselves, and how you can be a part of the solution to end sexual assault and dating abuse. You will learn active bystander behavior, body awareness, self-defense, and media literacy skills and put them to use in your own inspired way. We’ll give you the tools you need to help stop the violence!

Consciousness and Experience - Elective
Perhaps the oldest questions in philosophy revolve around Consciousness: How is it that we are able to perceive the world in the way we do? What am I able to really know through my consciousness or experience? Are my thoughts and ideas caused by the world around me or is my reality caused thoughts and ideas? In this rigorous intensive we will explore the ideas behind consciousness and the way humans experience reality. We will read (a lot), discuss, and investigate consciousness, looking at the different interpretations and explanations of it. You will develop a better understanding of the way your brain and mind work, and will explore topics related to Psychology, Science, Literature, and of course, Philosophy.

Seeds of Peace - Elective
Want to develop as a leader and a mentor for other students? Interested in resolving conflict and helping people get along? Seeds of Peace Intensive will be run by seniors Zahara and Sahra to help CBHS students become better leaders and more skilled at resolving conflict.

The Natural World - Elective
Come and explore the natural world through the lens of art and science. Work with two seniors as they culminate their Senior Expeditions about Nature Deficit Disorder and immerse yourself in our natural world while learning about our local botany and working with local artists.

Career Exploration Week - Elective (Sophomores Only)
Sophomore Internship Intensive: An internship is a great way to get an inside glimpse of a company, an industry, and a particular occupation. It can help you discover if the career you are considering is right (or wrong) for you.

Experience Nature: Hurricane Island - .5 PE (Overnight)
This intensive is an all week overnight on hurricane island off the coast of Maine. Students will learn about the senior expeditions of Ben Tero and Emily Mooney and participate in activities relating to them, while also experiencing Hurricane island and all it has to offer.

Swimming - PE
Learn to swim! If you live in Maine, you should be able to swim. Join us at the pool and work with our student instructors to build your skills and get comfortable in the water.

Designing for the Future: Sharktank CBHS Style - Science
Have you ever seen the show Sharktank on MSNBC? In this intensive you will learn and use principles of design and prototyping to generate an idea for a new product. At the end of the week your team will present your product to a panel of local venture capitalists (Our Sharks) in a boardroom at the L.L. Bean Corporate Offices in Freeport. The Sharks will decide the merits of your idea and whether they would put their money behind backing your team's product. This intensive is designed for students interested in design, engineering, and business.

Sabermetrics - Math
Who will win the Casco Bay 2015 Fantasy Baseball league? Join our intensive and learn how the emerging field of sabermetrics can help you predict how players and teams will do in individual games and over the course of a season. Weather permitting, we will head to Hadlock Field and watch and score some spring baseball. This course will provide math credit.

Storytelling - English
We all have a story to tell. Learn the art of storytelling and the craft of spinning a tale in this intensive.

Photography - Art
Takin’ it to the streets! The city through the camera lens: Like taking photos? Want to learn how to take more powerful ones? In this intensive, the city is our classroom and our task will be to capture its essence through the camera lens. Develop your personal photographic vision by learning to record unique and unusual moments using your digital camera (or one of ours). Join your creative companions on this journey through time, space and downtown Portland. See your city through a different lens!

Celebrating 10 Years of CBHS - Art
Create art out of CBHS history. How can we tell the story of Casco Bay's first 10 years in a fantastic, immortal visual? Work with local professional artists and collagists - as well as CBHS artifacts - and your own talent and imagination - to create a permanent installation commemorating the first decade at CBHS.

Grad Camp - Course Credit
Grad Camp: a place to make sure you finish what you started four years ago.
