Well, it's been raining all day today, with temperatures between 11 and 6 degrees Centigrade. And yes, I took the car for a wash, insane as it sounds. The roads in Romania are still pretty dirty. Less potholes than in the past years, but still a lot of mud and dirt, and puddles on the asphalt. The car was so dirty that I couldn't stand anymore, although in just a few days it will be right back as it was today. :) I was pretty surprised when my friend Mihai in London told me that he didn't have to wash his car for three months in a row. Yes, they don't get dirty at all there, so there's no need to do it more often than that, unless you travel outside the city or you go offroad for a little ride in the countryside. A ride in the countryside it is for us, each and every day around the city, through lots of mud and rain. In Cluj you have to wash your car at least every couple of weeks, though every week would be even better. In 15 days, it will be hard to distinguish the colour of your car from half down, otherwise, haha. I was the only client at the rather large carwash at Mercur, the guys looked pretty surprised at me coming in out of the blue. Noone washes their cars in this rain, that's what the looks in their eyes said, I must be nuts. Well I said I know, with a loud voice, but I really want it clean at least for a couple of days, and let's hope we'll chase away this ugly rain somehow, eventually. They smiled, looked at each other, then in the end, one of the four guys stood up, and came out to do the dirty work. I've had this car brought in from Germany, 27 months ago, it was 45 months old back then. I am the second owner, it has previously belonged to Baxter Deutschland Gmbh., the German subsidiary of Baxter Healthcare, a US-based global medical research company. They've sold the car through a buyback program, just a few months after its extended 3-year service and warranty plan has expired. It stayed at a second-hand dealer's car park for about 5 months until I bought it, and got it shipped into Romania on a platform. Manufactured around Christmas 2002, the car got first registered only in Jan 2003, which makes it a 2003 in the papers. I drive it since the beginning of October 2006, the same month I've bought this camera I'm shooting my stuff with. (a wide angle, a long lens, a regular one, and a large aperture lens, well at least.) And it can't go that far. And I can do nothing but agree with Mr. Pocket. At least for the time being. Back to the car, this is my second Audi, and my third car now. The first one was an old 1983 Audi 100, 5-speed, 5-cylinder 2144cmc petrol engine. It did guzzle some, and even ate some oil every now and then, but who cared back in the day. It was my first car, I've enjoyed it so much! That old 135bhp engine had some 360k km (200k miles) when I've bought it, and it was still good and strong. Well, at least for a while then. :) The car was large and spacey, and I've definitely loved the quality manufature it had in every bit and pice in it, even as old (12 years+) as it was. My second car was a 1993 5-speed Ford Mondeo, with a 1.6L 16-valve Zetec engine, a complete failure. Well, it was still better than nothing, and did a good job anyhow. Got it when it was some 8 years+ old, second hand, with 125k km on the mileage counter. I'm pretty much sure now, that it had at least twice as much in reality, as I have bought it from "private handlers". They've brought it in from Utrecht, The Netherlands, and I'm pretty much sure they have mingled with the mileage counter, like they always do here. 85% of the cars on the local second-hand market have their mileage "fixed" to a much lower number. There are at least a couple of guys in town who know how to do it, and it's quite a profitable "job", from what I've heard. There are plenty of private "businessmen" here who used to live on private second-hand car handling here.And when I say private, they do it as persons, not as a regitered business, or anything. They "fish" for used cars online, on every major European car handler's site. The German Mobile.de is one of their top choice, however, doe to the large competition, they are now bringing cars in from even much further than: France, Belgium, The Netherlands, etc. Matching to local market, they pick up a net gain of 500 to 2000 Euros per car brought in and resold, without paying those taxes, as a regular used car business would do. Some of these guys have small networks of friends driving or hauling, so they can bring in and sell up to 5-10 cars or even more in a good month, sometimes even 20+ when it's in top season.
