Call Me Mum (22 June 2006), Sydney Film Festival. Also airs on SBS.
Catherine plays: Kate.
Call My Mum is a telemovie which was first aired on SBS in 2006. It seems to air on this channel every couple of years or so; the last time it aired was in September 2010.
Kate is a foster mother, who is possibly in her mid-thirties, given the time frame from when she first met five-year-old Warren as a nurse when she was in her early 20s until the present time. Now, she is onboard a plane from Sydney to Brisbane, taking the somewhat incapacitated Warren (Dayne Christian) - now 18 - to see his very sick mother Flo (Vicki Saylor) in the hospital. Unknown to Kate however, her parents, Dellmay (Lynette Curran) and Keith (Ross Thompson) are planning a 'surprise' for their daughter when she and Warren arrive in Brisbane to stay with them while they are there. Kate is a very upfront kind of woman, who, while she loves Warren, seems to feel as though he has been a bit of a burden on her for the past 13 years. Especially given that Warren is prone to making up horrible lies about Kate - such as one where he tells a television reporter that she 'stole' him.
Kate's background as a nurse working at a place called Cherrymead (also known as The Tip), are a possible motivation for her strong and dominant personality traits. Her personality sort of reminded me of Catherine's character Kerry in the television drama Rush (having watched most of Rush before this movie).
The film is interesting in that it is presented in a sort of 'mockumentary' style, with each of the characters talking to the camera. The only two characters who interact with one another are Dellmay and Keith. There are only five characters, and only three locations - a plane, a hospital room and a house. Overall I enjoyed Call Me Mum and would recommend it to people to watch!
