National Capitol

Francisco Rodríguez Ledesma is considered the initiator of the Wall of Havana, starting it on the side of the bay, the start date was February 4, 1674.

The land section of the Wall of Havana, from Punta to La Tenaza and thence to Paula [1695-1702] was completed and in full, ie, bypassing the city also by the sea side in 1740.

The Wall of Havana had an average of 1.40 meters thick and 10 high, all good stalls. It was 9 bastions and a bulwark, La Tenaza, joined by curtains, they could have four guns on their faces and two on each flank. In the bulwarks there were sentry boxes for sentries.

It also had covered road with their parade grounds, wide moat and escarpment; its endowment was 3,400 men and their armament was 180 weapons of different caliber.

The nine gates were in front of Muralla Street, which later became known as Puerta de Tierra, La Punta, El Arsenal, La Tenaza, of Luz, of San Jose and Jesus Maria and in the nineteenth century Colon and the two doors of Monserrate, corresponding to the streets of Obispo and O'Reilly. The walls were demolished between August 8, 1863 and early twentieth century, surviving as heritage places some cloths, walls and sentry boxes, being the portion of greater length which was retained by the Central Railway Station Havana (Curtain Wall and Gate La Tenaza in Egido and San Isidro), where a bronze plaque which reproduces on a map of Havana intramural tour of the walls with bulwark, sentry boxes and doors.
