Now as I was saying the first step to rafting a river is getting your raft to the point on said river or creek in this case. Normally you drive to the launch site but, this was not your normal everyday run of the mill raft trip. The preferred mode of travel for the raft was to use a hand truck and roll the raft up to the launch site. Sounds easy enough, but being someone who has more experience with a hand truck than I care to think about I remained skeptical. As we loaded our gear for the trip at the trail head... the first problem came to the forefront. The tires on the dolly were flat. After asking nearly everyone in the parking lot if they had a bike tire pump and finding none it was decided that flat tires are better than no tires after all its only a couple of miles.
Dodge ILL Special
Dodge ILL Special
Just bought this photo on Ebay. The story of the Ill Specials is related in my book "American Car Haulers". This 1934 or 35 Dodge truck is a 4X2, the single tires on the rear are actually the front wheels of the trailer dolly.Due to pressure from a strong rail road lobby in ILL, 4-car semi-trailers were not permitted in Ill until after WWII. Carriers running thru ILL usually had a few of these specials that complied with the law and still hauled 4 units. They were more difficult to handle and load. Later models eliminated the dolly and used tandem axles on the trailer. The car above the cab is a Dodge and the others are Packards, 1935's, I believe.
