Frying Pan Lakes, Hunter-Frying Pan Wilderness, Colorado
We returned to the Frying Pan Lakes just four weeks after our first visit. Only a few hikes are good enough to be repeated in a season, let alone so quickly. Much had changed, as the trail was free of snow (nor did it snow on us this time), and the wildflowers were just about peaking. The diversity of wildflowers on this hike was greater than any I remember, and the number of columbines had to exceed just about any other place. This is lower Frying Pan Lake, looking down-valley. Once you get a mile or so up from the trailhead, there are incredible views all around. I think the tremendous beauty of the area distorts time, as both hikes up to the lakes seemed to fly by quickly, while the hikes down at the end of the day seemed much longer.

Frying Pan Creek
This is Frying Pan Creek in Mt. Rainier National Park. On the left it was a beautiful creek. After we hiked around a bit and came back, it had turned to the color of chocolate milk, probably due to a landslide or something further up the mountain! It was amazing what a difference a half hour could make!
