After School Enrichment and Home School Courses Available:

LEGO SIMPLE MACHINES PRE-ROBOTICS (6 - 8 yrs old)

Our class uses the Simple Machines set and activity pack and is an excellent way to introduce budding builders to key simple machines concepts while building teamwork and communication skills. 
Elementary students will discover basic physical science models such as gears, pulleys, levers, and wheels and axles through observation, prediction, reasoning, and critical thinking for the younger child. 
This class is an excellent precursor to the Robotics program, giving students the basic building skills and real world engineering designs needed to flourish in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) concepts at an age appropriate level. 
While computer programming will not be used there is a writing component and we will reference computer models. No previous experience is required. Class size limited. Class sessions are 1.5 hours each week for 6 weeks. Recommended for 2nd or 3rd grade.  Sign up quickly to reserve your space.

WeDo ROBOTICS BUILD AND PROGRAM 1 & 2 (Beginner Level 1, 7 - 10 yrs old)
Our class uses the WeDo set and activity pack and is an excellent way to introduce young builders to building and programming concepts while building teamwork and communication skills. Activities are divided into four themes – Amazing Mechanisms, Wild Animals, Play Soccer, and Adventure Stories. Using drag-and-drop software, powered by LabVIEW™, an icon based, intuitive programming environment, students will get their first Lego programming experience.
This class is an excellent bridge from Simple Machines to the Robotics program, giving students the basic building skills and real world engineering designs needed to flourish in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Elementary students will work with simple machines: levers, pulleys, gears and transmission of motion using observation, prediction, reasoning, and critical thinking. No previous experience is required. Class sessions are 1.5 hours each week for 6 weeks. Recommended for 2nd to 5th grade. Class can be repeated – new challenges available each session. LEGO ROBOTICS EXPLORATION (Beginner Level 1, 8 - 12 yrs old)

This fun and exciting class is ideal for beginners. Students will be building and programming robots using a variety of LEGO® Mindstorms™ kits.  Working in pairs using LEGO blocks, gears, motors and sensors, students will learn the basics of building and programming.  Students will learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills while sharing a robotics kit and computer. Students will have an opportunity to try different LEGO systems such as the Simple Machines kit, WeDo kit and NXT kit to learn the basics in gears, levers, pulleys, engineering design and programming with a computer to teach their robots to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve weekly challenges. This class is excellent for students who have no robotic experience as it allows them an opportunity to explore and experiment with new concepts. This class is good preparation for students interested in learning robotics as it sets the foundation and prepares them for more advanced topics.  Students who take this class always perform better in advanced classes.  Parents will be invited to view various game activities. No previous experience is required. Students must be in 4th or 5th grade to attend LEGO Exploration classes.

LEGO NXT MINDSTORMS ROBOTICS (Beginner to Intermediate Level 1-28 - 14 yrs old)

This STEM based class is an in-depth investigation of building and programming robots using the LEGO® Mindstorms™ NXT Robotics System. Students will learn construction and programming with the NXT intelligent brick using servo style motors, touch, light and ultrasonic sensors. Students will build a wide variety of robots and program them with a computer to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve weekly game challenges. Students work in pairs and small teams, sharing an NXT robotics kit and computer. This class is good preparation for students interested in robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League, Bricks by the Bay or Tech Challenge. Parents will be invited to view various game activities. No previous experience is required. Class sessions are 1.5 hours each week, for 6 weeks.  Class can be repeated – new challenges available each session. Recommended for 4th to 7th grade. 

LEGO NXT TEAM PROJECT - GREEN CITY (Intermediate to Advanced Level 2-38 - 14 yrs old)

Green City Challenge

This innovative class uses the LEGO® Mindstorms™ NXT Robotics System. This class is teamwork centric with an emphasis on projects. Students will continue to explore construction and programming techniques with the NXT intelligent brick using servo style motors, touch, light and ultrasonic sensors.  Students will focus on teamwork while learning to build and program a variety of long term robot projects in preparation for game challenges, demonstrations and competitions.  Students will work in pairs and small teams, sharing an NXT robotics kit and computer.  Students will be invited to attend conventions and competitions such as Bricks by the Bay and Maker Faire (some additional costs may apply) and is good preparation for robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League. This class will teach students teamwork, project planning, documentation skills, presentation skills. Parents will be invited to view various game activities. Previous experience such as the Level 1 or Level 2 class or computer skills are strongly recommended. Schedule subject to tournament availability. 

Notes: Class can be repeated – new challenges available each session. Class sessions are 1.5 to 2 hours each week, for 6-8 weeks. Class does not guarantee a winning team. Some meetings and events will be on weekends to be determined. Schedule subject to tournament availability. Students must be in must be in 4th – 8th grade. Limited availability. 

LEGO FLL TEAM PROJECT (Advanced Level 38 - 14 yrs old) 
This exhilarating class is teamwork focused with an emphasis on projects. In this advanced projects session students are expected to either have previous experience building and programming using motors and sensors or have taken the Level 1 or 2 robotics class. Students will focus on teamwork while learning to build and program a of long-term robot project suitable for game challenges, demonstrations and competitions. Students will be building and programming robots using the LEGO® Mindstorms™ NXT or EV3 Robotics System. Students will be invited to attend competitions and conventions held by FIRST LEGO League (some additional costs may apply). This class will teach students teamwork, project planning, documentation skills, and presentation skills. Parents will be invited to view various game activities. Previous experience such as the Level 1 or Level 2 class, Lego camp or computer skills are required. Schedule subject to tournament availability. Class does not guarantee a winning team. Class can be repeated – new challenges available each year. Class sessions are 2 hours each week, for 10 weeks. Note: Some meetings and events will be on weekends to be determined.  Schedule subject to tournament availability. Students must be in must be in 4th – 8th grade, with prior experience to attend. Limited availability.

LEGO EV3 MINDSTORMS ROBOTICS (Advanced Level 39 - 16 yrs old
This STEM based class is an advanced class using the LEGO® Mindstorms™ EV3 Robotics System to build and program robots. Students will learn construction and programming with the EV3 intelligent brick using servo style motors, touch, color, gyro and ultrasonic sensors.  Students will build a wide variety of robots and program them with a computer to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve weekly game challenges.  Students work in pairs and small teams, sharing an EV3 robotics kit and computer.  This class is good preparation for students interested in robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League  or Tech Challenge.  Parents will be invited to view various game activities. No previous experience is required but is strongly recommended. Students must be in 4th to 8th grade to attend EV3 classes. Class can be repeated – new challenges available each session. 

LEGO EV3 TEAM PROJECT - SPACE CHALLENGE (Advanced Level 39 - 16 yrs old

This STEM based class is an advanced class using the LEGO® Mindstorms™ EV3 Robotics System to build and program robots. Students will learn construction and programming with the EV3 intelligent brick using servo style motors, touch, color, gyro and ultrasonic sensors.  Students will build a wide variety of robots and program them with a computer to move, react, and make sounds in order to solve weekly game challenges. Students work in pairs and small teams, sharing an EV3 robotics kit and computer.  This class is good preparation for students interested in robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League or Tech Challenge. Parents will be invited to view various game activities. No previous experience is required but is strongly recommended. Students must be in 4th to 8th grade to attend EV3 classes. Class can be repeated – new challenges available each session.

LEGO ROBOTICS DESIGN – LEGO Digital Designer and LEGO Cad (Advanced Level 49 - 16 yrs old)

This STEM class is an introduction to Computer Aided Design using LEGO models as the subject matter. This program will be made available to 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. Students will use a computer to "draw" LEGO designs and models that they create. We will be using customized LEGO kits, LEGO Design and LEGO Cad software to teach students about real world science, technology, engineering and math concepts in a fun and exciting way. Students will create a moc Lego set design for their final project. This class is intended for an advanced student that has already taken the level 2 class. Classes dates to be determined. SCRATCH DESIGN – (Advanced Level 48 - 16 yrs old)

This STEM class is an introduction to Game Design. This program will be made available to 3rd grade and up. Students will use a computer to learn game designing. We will be using Scratch 2 software to teach students about real world game design concepts in a fun and exciting way. The students can download and practice their games at home. This class is intended for an intermediate or advanced student that has already taken some classes. Students must be able to read and write. Classes dates to be determined. Look for a schedule coming soon.

Birthday Parties

Parties must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance. Minimum 6, maximum 20. We usually provide two hours worth of activities, you provide cake and refreshments. Call or email for a quote.

Coaching

We are available for coaching for robotics tournaments. All requests must be booked in advance and we have limited availability. Minimum team size is 6, maximum is 10. Team interview required. Call or email for a quote.

Announcing, Judging, Referees for Robotics competitions

We love supporting our community and offer volunteers for announcing, judging and refereeing at local LEGO competitions. Occasionally we can use or offer high school student community service hours. Email for specifics.

Boy Scout Robotics Merit Badge Counseling

We love supporting our community and offer Boy Scout Merit Badge Counseling. Classes are separate. Email for specifics.

2017 Summer Camp Information:

De Anza Extended Year Summer College

De Anza Extended Year Summer College for Kids and Teens is a summer enrichment program where the focus is on teaching and learning, not grades and exams. The program operates at three locations for easy access, is four weeks in length and is offered in the morning hours.

LEGO Robotics NXT 
Lawson Middle School
Entering grades 6th-9th

This class is an in-depth exploration of building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT Robotics Set. Students learn mechanical design, construction, programming and teamwork skills. In small teams, using LEGO blocks, motors and sensors, students build robots that can walk, draw, move objects, or find their own way and avoid obstacles. Students use a control console or computer to teach their robots to move, react and make sounds in order to solve challenges. Students work in pairs and small teams, sharing a robotics kit and computer. This class is good preparation for students interested in robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League. Cost includes materials and computer rental fees. 

LEGO Robotics EV3 
Lawson Middle School
Entering grades 7th-9th

Prerequisite: This class is recommended for students with some prior LEGO Robotics experience. This class is an in-depth exploration of building and programming robots using the New LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robotics System. Students will practice construction and programming with the EV3 intelligent brick with servo style motors, ultrasonic sensor, light sensor and new this year the color sensor. Students build a variety of robots and program them with a computer to move, react and make sounds in order to solve challenges. Students work in pairs and small teams, sharing a robotics kit and computer. This class is good preparation for students interested in robotics competitions such as FIRST LEGO League. Cost includes materials and computer rental fees.
