Munster Cross Country Championships (Uneven Ages), W.I.T.,
Sunday, 11 November 2012.
Our Athletes were out in strong numbers today in what was a very tough, particularly hilly, cross country challenge in Waterford. The venue was Waterford Institute of Technology, and this was undoubtedly one of the hardest, if not the hardest cross country courses witnessed by coaches and athletes ever before. The pictures on the website, cannot do any justice to the height of some of the hills our gallant runners had to climb today.
There was tough competition for all age groups, with endurance and stamina being pushed to the limits of every athlete in the competition. The race of the day, would have to be the battle for the Under 19 Boys’ title, which was a hugely anticipated event and was a thrilling race as expected.
We had amazing performances from everyone who did their best on the course. We had medallists and also a number of our Athletes romping home to National Championship Qualification.
Congratulations to everyone who took part in this hugely contested event. Thank you as usual, to all parents/guardians/friends/supporters and animals (you know who you are Roxy!!), who travelled the long distance to ensure the support and attendance of our brilliant young Athletes. Pictures from today can be viewed on our photos page.

A number of Carraig Athletes competed in the Munster Juvenile Even Age Cross Country Championships today. This highly competitive event was held in the one of the most scenic areas in the Country. CORK COUNTY CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Club were very proud to be selected as the Hosting Venue for one of this years’ Cork County Cross Country Championships. Races were held for Juvenile, Novice and Under 23 Catergories. The large volume of entrants in each race was a sight to behold and there were some hotly contested races and some big finishes to be seen. It proved the strength of all concerned who clearly gave it their all, and provided a great days sport for the supporters who turned out in great force to cheer on these talented athletes.
Carraig was particularly delighted to able to field teams in the Novice Mens and Novice Womens Races. It was a fantastic turn out for the club, and we are going from strength to strength. Special mentions to our very young members, who raced what was a very long race for most. It was a difficult race and we are proud of you, and look forward to seeing you all romping home for the Club in another race. Thank you to all those who have had their washing machines on the go, to clean the “mucky” gear.
The course was well planned and well laid-out and we had great feedback from the numerous athletes who participated. A huge thanks is owed to Teddy O’Sullivan, one of our biggest supporters, for allowing us to hold this prestigious event. His beautiful land is in such a scenic location and in great condition, and the Club is thankful for his generosity.
Thank you to everyone who helped, from stewarding, setting up the course, admissions, car park attendants, and all who contributed in any way, to ensuring that the day went smoothly.
Pictures from yesterday’s event, can be viewed on our pictures page. The next event will be the Munster Juvenile Even Age Championships in Beaufort, Co. Kerry next Sunday.

East Cork awards night
The Annual East Cork awards night was held last night in the Walter Raliegh Hotel in Youghal. These awards are to celebrate the achievements of East Cork Juvenile athletes that won medals at National level last year. It was a great night and a proud one for all our athletes, their families and for our club. Our athletes that recieved awards last night are listed below.
Ben Atkinson & Victor Ugwah
Ben and Victor had Individual success in the County Championships with Ben taking the Gold in the U9 200m and Victor taking the gold in the U9 Long Jump. They then won a silver medal in the U9 300m in the pair’s competition at the Munster T&F Championships. This highly talented pair then followed up with a superb victory over 300m in the All Ireland Pairs T&F Championships in Templemore.
Victor Ugwah, Ben Atkinson, Sean O’Donoghue & Felix Murphy
These four young athletes started the year off by taking the silver medals in the U9 4 x 100m relay at the Munster Juvenile indoors. They then swept the boards outdoors in the U9 4 x 100m Relay. They won the County and Munster Championships and then topped it all off by taking home the gold medals after the most exciting race of the day at the All Ireland U9-U11 T&F Championships. They certainly have a bright future in athletics.
Seamus made his athletics debut last year, and what a great year it turned out to be! He placed 2nd in the county U11 Cross country championships then followed that up with a marvelous 10th place in the Munster Championships. Seamus rounded the year off with a gold medal on the victorious Cork team at the National Cross Country Championships held in the Curragh.
Arianne made a great start to 2011 winning a bronze medal in the U12 shot putt at the Munster Juvenile Indoor T&F Championships. She followed this success up by winning an excellent bronze medal in the U12 Shot at the National Indoor Championships held in Magherafelt. Arianne continued her good form in the outdoor season making it all the way to the All Irelands in the Shot Putt.
James had a great season last year. He won 2 throws medals in the U14 County Championships, Gold in the Shot and silver in the Discus. His good form continued in the Munster Championships where he came 4th in both the U14 Shot and Discus, narrowly missing out on a medal but more importantly still qualifying for the National Championships. At the All Irelands all James good work in training was rewarded with a new PB of 28.56m to take an excellent Bronze medal in the Discus. He also finished a great 5th in the Shot Putt final.
Robyn O’Callaghan Roche
Robyn started 2011 in superb form, winning the gold medal in the U15 60m sprint at the Munster Juvenile Indoor Championships. Robyn then went on to win the silver medal in the 60m at the National Indoor Championships held in Magherafelt, setting a new PB of 8.06 Seconds. Robyn also won the 100m, 200m and led her relay team to the gold in the County Championships in May. Unfortunately Robyn missed the Munster Outdoor Championships which deprived her of the chance to defend her National 100m title won the previous year.
