Experience & Qualifications

I hold a Diploma in Gestalt Counselling, (which included Mindfulness, Body Work and Spiritual Exploration), a Degree in Psychology and a Masters in Transpersonal Arts and Practice, as well as a qualification in Understanding Gender Dysphoria. I am UKRC registered and a BACP accredited counsellor and psychotherapist.

I have in excess of twenty years experience working in private practice as a counsellor and supervisor. Prior to this for thirteen years I worked with issues of rape and sexual abuse at the Portsmouth and Area Rape Crisis Service (PARCS).  During my time at PARCS I obtained a group work certificate and for seven years facilitated the supervision group for practising volunteer counsellors.  I worked with a range of issues, including, rape and sexual abuse, trauma, sexuality and gender, abortion, self-esteem and confidence, anger, HIV and aids, race and discrimination.

After leaving PARC’s and setting up my private practice  as a counsellor and supervisor, I also worked for three years at Chrysalis. Chrysalis is a service for gender dysphoric people struggling with the transformation process. As well as being part of a team that set up the Portsmouth branch of Chrysalis, I have counselled individuals and facilitated support groups. While I was there I was able to gain experience and training in working with a range of Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) issues.

I have co-written and presented further education courses in assertive communication at Highbury college. I have been a  visiting lecturer at Portsmouth University, covering a range of counselling related issues.

I hold a qualification in parenting skills and have facilitated courses for Social Services working with parents struggling with children described as having ‘challenging’ behaviour. I have in my work as a therapist, drawn on this skill to work closely with parents and children, as well as family groups.

Other groups I have facilitated include pain management for chronically ill people and mindfulness based drum meditation for relaxation and stress management.

Issues I most generally work with, include, stress and anxiety, depression, anger management, loss and bereavement. relationship difficulties with individuals, couples or groups, sexual  and emotional abuse, gender, sexuality, disordered eating, assertiveness, trauma, self-esteem and confidence, personal development, and LGBT issues.
