L'Excessive

Carla Bruni introduces her song by saying "Cest une chanson de quelqu'un qui aime beaucoup les exces.  Mmmmm Mmmmm!"  Her mischevous look tells us who is the person, who enjoys stretching the boundaries.

Carla Bruni must have had many experiences of the feral rat pack of the media turning their attentions on her.  Her reaction must have been to adopt the inscrutable poise of a young lady superior to the limitations of conventional existence.

However, I don't think for one minute that she was calm inside, when the journalists set their wild stories running about her, pried into her personal life, which they called excessive, told her what to do, and got worked up about the amount of love she enjoyed.

Before the start of the song, Carl bursts out laughing, when she sees that Louis Bertignac, has a tuft of hair sticking right up.-"Tu as une meche toute perchee".  He becomes self conscious and complains that everyone is trying to humilate him: "tout le monde essaye de me humilier".  Later he adds "Ca ne marche pas" -it's not working- but I think he just means his hair will not lie down.

 L'Excessive (1)

Je n'ai pas d'excuse,

C'est inexplicable,

Même inexorable

Mmmmm

The girl who goes to excess

I have no excuse,

It is inexplicable,

Even inexorable,

Mmmmm

It’s not for the ecstasy, it’s that existence,

Without a little extreme, is unacceptable,

I go to excess,

I'Love when it runs wild.

When it all builds up

Me, I stay relaxed.

I go to excess,

When it'all explodes,

When life’s put on show,

That’s a great delight.

There are those, it angers, others whom it riles,

Those who demand that I should come back into line,

There're those who exclaim that

it’s a  complex,

Those who get worked up by the all those "X’s" in  the text

I go to excess,

I'Love when it runs wild.

When it all builds up

Me, I stay relaxed.

I go to excess,

When it'all explodes,

When life’s put on show,

That’s a great delight.

I go to excess,

I'Love when it runs wild

When all goes too far,

Me, I stay relaxed.

I go to excess,

When it'all explodes,

When life’s put on show,

That’s a great delight.

Guitar

 I have no excuse,

It is inexplicable,

Even inexorable,

Mmmmm.........

TRANSLATION NOTES

1) Je suis excessive  = "Excessive" in French has a sense we do not have in English.  "C'est une femme excessive" means "she is a woman who takes everything too far"- (Collins Robert).  To hold onto the French term, I have used "To go to excess"

2) Transe= As well as meaning "trance", the French word also means, "anguish", "excitement", "frenzy".

3) exquis = As well as meaning "exquisite" the French word also means "delightful
