If you are a dementia caregiver, you have reached a friend.

My name is Vijaya. My father, a kind and sweet tempered person died in June this year (2011). He was 81. He had been diagnosed with Binswanger’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease in 2000. We went through the ups and downs of his illness caring for him at home. This became increasingly difficult from 2005 after my mother passed away. I had to quit my job and stay at home to be with him. I became a full time care giver.

I know from my personal experience in dealing with caring for someone with dementia 24x7 how taxing this can be especially because there is a lack of resources and support for carers of dementia patients.  But I did learn many things from speaking to others who had cared for dementia patients.  This website is started with the sole aim of reaching out to other caregivers who are in need of a friend. To assure you that you are not alone. Take heart that there are others you can reach out to.

Sharing experiences, information and suggestions goes a long way in your lonely labour of love.  Go to the DISCUSSION FORUM   and meet other caregivers online.  Share with others your ideas on how to overcome the daily challenges in caring for a dementia patient. Meet people who understand your frustrations and your fears because they are in a similar situation themselves. Become a part of this community of caregivers and let us help each other.
Write to me at caringmumbai@gmail.com  regarding information on a support group for caregivers residing between Powai and Mulund in Mumbai.
