1390 Petition for the virtuous

In 1390 as Adam was in Rome working towards the canonization of Brigit, he signed a petition on behalf of the Queen Margaret of Sweden, along with the Cardinal of Alencon and the Cardinal of Bari asking the pope to ensure that Brigit be made a saint. As the records in this section show, Adam devoted a considerable amount of his time and effort to the task once he had been restored as a cardinal in 1389. He clearly felt a debt of gratitude to the Swedish mystic to whom he had prayed in the depth of despair in Nocera and it is to his credit that he saw the task though to a successful conclusion. The document below is fairly formulaic, proclaiming Brigit's virtues and acknowledging the work the good cardinals had done in satisfying themselves that Brigit was indeed worthy of honour.

On a separate note a number of eminent members of the papal court also signed the petition after the three main cardinals who had been commissioned to examine the case. It is noteworthy that one was Thomas Walkyington, a known associate of Adam Easton's (described as a doctor and auditor of the Sacred Palace) and Richard Carlton, another Englishman (described as a doctor of law and advocate) with connections to Adam.
