Well, this is what the contractors found when they pulled up the linoleum and the underlayment: holes, loose filler pieces, gaps, and hundreds of nails. They guessed the old wood floor may have been squeaking at some point, which accounts for some of the nails. Putting down the underlayment accounts for the rest; apparently staples hadn't been invented yet. The holes were presumably for pipes, though we can't guess to or from what. Patching, filling, and refinishing all that would have cost more then just getting a new floor -- plus, the guy told Kris to never tell anyone he did it, because of how shitty it would have looked -- so we're just getting a new floor: birch planks, finished and stained to match the rest of the house. They'll start work tomorrow morning, and be finished on Sunday.
