Welcome to the home page for the Major James S. McKinnie Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.
CAP Major James Steven McKinnie was killed in a hit and run bicycle accident on June 30, 2005 near his home in Byram, MS while training for an upcoming 26 mile marathon race on July 4, 2005. James was riding north on a straight and level stretch of the frontage road with all required safety equipment including a bicycle helmet. A truck heading the same direction hit him from behind. The driver left the scene of the accident and James was rushed to the University Medical Center with severe injuries to the head, a crushed left shoulder and a broken leg. Doctors did all they could to save him, but he passed away on July 4th, 2005, the day he was to participate in the marathon. The man charged with leaving the scene of an accident after hitting Major McKinnie was sentenced to the maximum five years in prison after pleading guilty.
The Squadron consists of approximately 35 members, almost evenly divided between Adult Members (Seniors) and Cadets.
We meet in the Mississippi Wing Headquarters Building on the South Ramp of Hawkins Field (HKS) in Jackson, MS. The Wing HQ is located at 1635 Airport Drive just off of Woodrow Wilson Avenue and adjacent to the Sonny Guy Golf Course.
