The Clerk's House: Shoreditch High Street
The Clerk's House: Shoreditch High Street
The street front (which looks like the side to me) has had a shopfront added. The shop is called Milk and sells, amongst other things, Fornasetti china. I had a Fornasetti plate many years ago that disappeared, whenever we moved home things were lost. In the background is St. Leonards's Church. The present house, which was erected in 1735, is built in stock brickwork and consists of two storeys, attics and basement. The windows have frames flush with the wall, with the glass divided into small panes by substantial sash bars. The entrance door has a hood supported on carved brackets. The interior of the premises contains some portions of panelling of a period (probably the 16th century) earlier than the remainder in the house. The front room on the first floor has square deal panelling, and a china cupboard with fluted pilasters and a semi-circular head. The staircase has well-turned balusters and moulded close strings.British History Online. Grade II listed, probably former Watch house. Early C18 building. Main north front of 2 storeys, 4 windows. Brown brick with parapet partly rebuilt. Gauged flat red brick arches to ground floor sash windows. 1st floor flush framed windows, all with bars . On street front similar windows 2 on 1st floor. Ground floor a wide replacement, also with glazing bars. Attic window in gable end. Door of 4 fielded and 2 flat panels in panelled reveal with moulded architrave. Cornice hood on carved consoles. British Listed Buildings
