Cantando Choir and Friends invite you to Gloria!

Music by Camille Saint-Saëns and Antonio Vivaldi, presented by Cantando Choir and Friends with conductor Rupert D’Cruze.

Saturday 19 November 2016 at 7.30pm

Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts

“This is glorious music,” says Cantando’s Musical Director, Rupert D’Cruze, of the Saint-Saëns Christmas Oratorio and Vivaldi Gloria which feature in the choir’s final concert for 2016. He is enthusiastic about the big sound that can be achieved in the Concert Chamber and the extra dimension this will add to the music.

French composer Camille Saint-Saëns was noted for his elegance of form and line and the beauty of his harmonies and chords. These characteristics are well suited to this arrangement of the traditional church liturgies surrounding Christmas. Vivaldi’s Gloria is a sunny and joyous work and its distinctive melodies and rhythms make it a well-known and much-loved piece. It was composed in Venice in 1715 but lay undiscovered until the late 1920s.

Cantando is delighted to welcome five exciting young soloists for the performance of these two works. All are past or present students of the Conservatorium of Music at Waikato University and among the many prestigious awards held by them are Sir Edmund Hillary and Dame Malvina Major Foundation scholarships. Singing with Cantando for the first time are soprano Blaire White, mezzo Cecily Shaw and tenor Filipe Manu. Filipe was awarded second place in this year’s Lexus Song Quest. The choir is very pleased to welcome back alto Elisha Hulton and baritone Jonathan Eyres, who both featured in Cantando’s Winter Warmer concert of 2015. “All five soloists are in the development phase of their singing careers and it is a privilege to be able to offer them this performance opportunity,” says Rupert.

Accompanying the choir and soloists will be a small orchestra comprised of local musicians from Opus Orchestra and the Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra. “This concert requires a specialized accompaniment,” explains Rupert, “which features organ and harpsichord in addition to the more usual strings, oboe and trumpet”.

While Gloria! is not strictly a ‘Christmas’ concert, choir members have certainly felt that Christmas has come early for them while they’ve been preparing this glorious music. The public is urged to join Cantando on Saturday 19 November and be inspired by this wonderful programme in the lead-up to a special time of year!
