Tidal pool sun dial
It is fun watching limpets, crabs, anemone, and starfish in the tidal pools, left behind at low tide. Sunday night June 14th, 2009 - my wife and I camped in the back of our pickup truck canopy at the “South Beach” camp on Washington’s Pacific Ocean coast. Monday, we drove to Neah Bay, where we took an 8 mile round trip hike from the Makah Indian Reservation trailhead, along Shi Shi beach, to the beach immediately south of the Point of the Arches - - and back. After the Shi Shi Beach hike, we drove back north and took the short, but outstanding, one mile round trip hike to the Cape Flattery & Tatoosh Island overlook. There we saw marine birds and were treated to the sight of a gray whale swimming north through the channel between Tatoosh Island and Cape Flattery. Tuesday, we drove from our “basic” motel room in Neah Bay, back to our home in Eastern Washington, via the Hood Canal route. The back road travel and hiking over the two and half days were really enjoyable. My wife and I both had a great time and especially enjoyed the hikes and the camp at South Beach. My flickr photo set “Shi Shi Beach - June 2009” has a detailed narrative of the trip and hikes.
Volkswagen Pickup With Canopy
Volkswagen Pickup With Canopy
Of course, commercial Transporters were available to Americans as well. Here’s a Mark 1 Transporter pickup truck with a canopy cover, similar to the fiberglass enclosures that graced the beds of American pickups later on. Except that this tentlike cover obviously isn't as good at protecting cargo from the elements. I like the shade of green. Based on the Beetle’s running gear, Transporters came in panel van, pickup, and even flatbed versions but the passenger versions remained the favored models in the U.S. Most American small businesses that needed delivery vans stayed with Detroit, and still do; minivans never caught on much for commercial use here. And in the U.S. of A., a pickup isn’t a real pickup unless it’s huge and has a big V-8 under the front hood. VW was ahead of its time in one respect. Transporter vans saw use in Europe as ambulances at a time when American ambulances were still mostly custom-built Cadillac station wagons. Today, vans are used as ambulances in the United States - just not VW vans. VW ambulances occasionally show up at Volkswagen shows, but not at Terryville. Not this year.
