Richard Sears
Richard Sears
Richard Sears was the founder, along with partner Alvah Roebuck, of Sears, Roebuck, & Company. Later, it would be shortened to Sears. Sears, born in Minnesota, worked for the local railroad station as a young man. This job, at the time used to pay bills, would turn out to set him on a path to being one of the biggest retailors in Chicago. In 1886, at the age of 23, a shipment of gold watches came into the station for a local watch salesman. At the time, wholesalers would ship their goods to businesses but would always ship extra as if it was a mistake. The wholesaler would sale these extra to the business for a cheaper price to save them money from shipping it back. It was a big scam and the wholesalers mad alot of money off this scam. On this day though, the business refused the extra watches. Sears saw an oppertunity and bought these watches for a cheap price. Working for the train station, along with the different time zones, he knew he could get rid of them quick to the people who work and travel the railways. Sears made enough money through this little venture that he opened a store in downtown Minneapolis caled RW Sears Watch Company. Now with his watch company, he needed more customers, but focused more on the farmers and rural areas which is where he grew up. He started writing promotional ads and found out he was good at it. He also convinced people who lived outside the city to do mail order, and with business now in the city and out of the city, the watch company was booming. In 1887, a year after his business took off, he moved it to Chicago where he could find more business. With the extra business, Sears needed a partner to help out, so he hired his first employee, Alvah Roebuck, who was a local watch repairman. In 1893, Roebuck would become a partner of Sears and the changed the named to Sear, Roebuck & Company. They also released their first sales catelog which at the time only had watches. In the next 4 years, as the company grew, the started list other items in their catelogs loike men and womans clothing, bycicles, and silverware. Roebuck would leave the company shortly after and the name of their business would be shortened to just Sears. Suffering from health issues, Sears would retire in 1908 and pass away in 1914. He is entombed here in Rosehill Mausoleum in Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, Il. It is hard to find his crypt in the mausoleum because it is under a stairway in a small closet. He is right on the other side of the crypts for John Shedd and Aaron Montgomery Ward if you find theirs.
Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph - The Moon Watch
Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph - The Moon Watch
Equipment used: Nikon D90 with Really Right Stuff (RRF) right angle bracket, Micro Nikkor 105mm AF lens, Gitzo 2220 tripod, Acratech GV2 gimbal/ball head, Photek light tent illumination by a single CFL 22 Watt table lamp. The Omega Speedmaster Professional, a simple mechanical chronograph, is one of greatest watches ever made. While not exactly "cheap", it is definitely a lot cheaper than similar watches from Patek Phillipe, Breguet, IWC, etc. It is even less than half the cost of the nearest equivalent from Rolex - model Daytona. But where the Omega Speedmaster Professional beats them all is its history and heritage. To know what that is, all you need to reverse the watch and read the inscription on the back which says "FLIGHT QUALIFIED BY NASA FOR ALL MANNED SPACE MISSIONS" and "THE FIRST WATCH WORN ON THE MOON". This is something no watch can have regardless of the price. Don’t they say that money does not buy class! Omega Speedmaster Professional is a hand wound watch. The story goes that automatic watches will not work reliably in space as the pendulum that winds automatic watches will not operate properly due to lack of or reduced gravity in space. The story also says that Neil Armstrong did not wear a watch when he set foot on the moon. He left it in the Lunar Module to use it for timing as some timer on board was busted. So the first watch on the moon a Omega Speedmaster Professional, of course, was worn by Buzz Aldrin. This was stolen from his home later and was never recovered. More importantly the Omega Speedmaster Professional played an important role in bringing back the Apollo 13 astronauts back safely by timing several rocket motor burns. Practically all Russian Cosmonauts also used Omega Speedmaster Professional watches later. Till now, it is not only the first watch on the moon, but also the "only" watch to be worn on the moon. It will be so perhaps till Chinese or Indian Astronauts will use some other brand. Let us see. Owning a Omega Speedmaster Professional is like owning a piece of history! Well, in the end I might add that I am the proud owner of this watch. Photographically this is not a very complex job other than the problem one usually faces when photographing highly reflective subjects (especially those with curved surfaces - like watch cases) against a white background. The clear demarcation of the watch case (see the top edge) against the white background was achieved by using a gobo. Hope you will enjoy the story! Thanks for your patience.
