Head of the Charles
I’m the coxswain in this Head of the Charles photo, the one with number “15” pinned to my back a few inches under my 64-year old gray head. The women, all awesome athletes, are members of the Chester River Rowing Club’s “over 50” eight, which means our average age was over 50. We finished the twisty three-mile course a respectable 16th out of 24 in 20 minutes and 19 seconds, with a sprint to the finish that was nothing short of amazing. It was a race we’ll be proud of for a long time.
Margie Merkin Elsberg
On December 10, 2007 Jane Lichtman beat Ruth Dunkle 401 to 379 at the Millburn NJ Scrabble club with the above pictured board. She had 2 bingos of 82 points each- LIQUORS and FURROWS. She had both blanks, the J,X,Q,Z, K and 3 of the 4 S's. Ruth did not challenge Jane's "phoney" play of YIKE.
Jane Lichtman reports, "I never, ever, thought that I would beat Ruth at Scrabble. What she doesn't say is that I had a little bit of help from the Scrabble gurus on my right and left...but I did it all myself! In true Wenonah sportsmanship fashion, Ruth was a gracious second-place finisher. I think that we were both equally surprised at the outcome."
