3601 S. Gaffey Street, Bldg. H

San Pedro, California

Driving

San Pedro is an outlying portion of the City of Los Angeles, 20 miles south of downtown, on a south-facing shoreline along the Pacific Ocean.  There is a website with directions for driving to San Pedro; see also maps and airport directions below.

Los Angeles is not all that hard to drive in, thanks to broad traffic lanes and generally courteous drivers.  You do have to be patient with traffic and plan ahead.

Airports

The main airport for Los Angeles is Los Angeles International Airport,  often called "LAX".  There are frequent flights to this bustling airport from all over the country and around the world.

Transportation from LAX, without car: The youth hostel website has extensive directions: scroll down to the bottom of the page. For specific information about shuttle services, which the hostel site does not provide, see the SuperShuttle and PrimeTime Shuttle websites.

For more information about travel from LAX, see also LAX's ground transportation page, including "Shared ride vans" and "Public transportation".

Transportation from LAX, with car:  from the airport area, follow the signs and this map to Interstate 405 and take this interstate going south for about 9 miles.  Take the exit for Interstate 110, going south.  Follow Interstate 110 to its terminus (7.7 miles).  Jog left to continue southward on Gaffey Street. Take Gaffey Street southward for 2.5 miles through San Pedro, going first through the business district and then up the hill through a residential area.  Turn right at the sign for Angel's Gate Park, then immediately right again up the hill.  Turn left at the sign "Vessel Traffic Center," then follow the arrow marked "Visitors".  Circle around to the right to arrive at a parking lot in front of Building H.  For details of the park, see Map 3 below.

A smaller airport you can also use is Long Beach Airport, with service by Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways and U.S. Airways.  It's also a little bit closer than LAX.  Transportation:  check this site for shuttles, etc.  By car:  follow signs to Interstate 405 North, turn south on Interstate 110, and follow the rest of the directions as given above for Los Angeles Airport.

Amtrak

Amtrak trains run to downtown Los Angeles, and then bus to San Pedro.  Check out this link.
