St. Ignatius Loyola Youngest son of Don Beltran Yanez de Onez y Loyola and Marina Saenz de Lieona y Balda (the name Lopez de Recalde, though accepted by the Bollandist Father Pien, is a copyist's blunder). Born in 1491 at the castle of Loyola above Azpeitia in Guipuscoa; died at Rome, 31 July, 1556. The family arms are: per pale, or, seven bends gules (?vert) for Onez; argent, pot and chain sable between two grey wolves rampant, for Loyola. The saint was baptized Inigo, after St. Enecus (Innicus), Abbot of Ona: the name Ignatius was assumed in later years, while he was residing in Rome. For the saint's genealogy, see Perez (op. cit. below, 131); Michel (op. cit. below, II, 383); Polanco (Chronicon, I, 51646). For the date of birth cfr. Astrain, I, 3 S. Conversion (1491-1521) At an early age he was made a cleric. We do not know when, or why he was released from clerical obligations. He was brought up in the household of Juan Velasquez de Cuellar, contador mayor to Ferdinand and Isabella, and in his suite probably attended the court from time to time, though not in the royal service. This was perhaps the time of his greatest dissipation and laxity. He was affected and extravagant about his hair and dress, consumed with the desire of winning glory, and would seem to heve been sometimes involved in those darker intrigues, for which handsome young courtiers too often think themselves licensed. How far he went on the downward course is still unproved. The balance of evidence tends to show that his own subsequent humble confessions of having been a great sinner should not be treated as pious exaggerations. But we have no details, not even definite charges. In 1517 a change for the better seems to have taken place; Velasquez died and Ignatius took service in the army. The turning-point of his life came in 1521. While the French were besieging the citadel of Pampeluna, a cannon ball, passing between Ignatius' legs, tore open the left calf and broke the right shin (Whit-Tuesday, 20 May, 1521). With his fall the garrison lost heart and surrendered, but he was well treated by the French and carried on a litter to Loyola, where his leg had to be rebroken and reset, and afterwards a protruding end of the bone was sawn off, and the limb, having been shortened by clumsy setting, was stretched out by weights. All these pains were undergone voluntarily, without uttering a cry or submitting to be bound. But the pain and weakness which followed were so great that the patient began to fail and sink. On the eve of Sts. Peter and Paul, however, a turn for the better took place, and he threw off his fever. So far Ignatius had shown none but the ordinary virtues of the Spanish officer. His dangers and sufferings has doubtless done much to purge his soul, but there was no idea yet of remodelling his life on any higher ideals. Then, in order to divert the weary hours of convalescence, he asked for the romances of chivalry, his favourite reading, but there were none in the castle, and instead they brought him the lives of Christ and of the saints, and he read them in the same quasi-competitive spirit with which he read the achievements of knights and warriors. "Suppose I were to rival this saint in fasting, that one in endurance, that other in pilgrimages." He would then wander off into thoughts of chivalry, and service to fair ladies, especially to one of high rank, whose name is unknown. Then all of a sudden, he became conscious that the after-effect of these dreams was to make him dry and dissatisfied, while the ideas of falling into rank among the saints braced and strengthened him, and left him full of joy and peace. Next it dawned on him that the former ideas were of the world, the latter God-sent; finally, worldly thoughts began to lose their hold, while heavenly ones grew clearer and dearer. One night as he lay awake, pondering these new lights, "he saw clearly", so says his autobiography, "the image of Our Lady with the Holy Child Jesus", at whose sight for a notable time he felt a reassuring sweetness, which eventually left him with such a loathing of his past sins, and especially for those of the flesh, that every unclean imagination seemed blotted out from his soul, and never again was there the least consent to any carnal thought. His conversion was now complete. Everyone noticed that he would speak of nothing but spiritual things, and his elder brother begged him not to take any rash or extreme resolution, which might compromise the honour of their family. [BB9550 > Gimp} So ok one of the complaints about digital cameras is that they let the shooter get away with being "snap-happy"...which is a valid issue, to a degree...to the degree that they spend a lot of time taking shots that they will never look at again. But what if they are legitimately trying to find the best framing possible, and fighting the camera to get a good shot...unsure of exactly what they really want and are willing to experiment to find a few different perspectives that result in great shots? That is a legitimate reason to take a lot of shots. But then the onus is on the photographer to actually do something with them besides just cherry-pick the shots straight out of the camera. For one thing how do you know what will really look best after post-processing? How do you know for sure what is actually worth post-processing in the first place, or shooting, or whatever/ Well you have to actually post-process *some* of them. Sure you can throw away the ones that display little potential, but the ones that are ok, you kinda have to actually post-process the lions' share of them, at least sometimes. Just so you have a good idea of what you're going to get if you do it, just as if you were experimenting with exposure or F# or shutter-speed. Certainly until you get something that really looks impressive, that makes you happy. And so, here we go. Trust me I outright thew away about a third of the shots. But I had to give up on strict framing, I even gave up on any "fill-light" style techniques, or any radical changes in contrast or brightness. I just focused on the geometry, and added a mild USM afterwards. And avoided reworking saved files, Not necessarily "easy" but somewhat straightforward and fast. It still took me a good 2 hours to generate these edits, post them on Flickr and set up the groups and sets and tags and labels. At the least Flickr needs better batch tools, I wanted to set up these 6 shots all the same way except for the comments in this one photo. The edits are a different story of course because you can't use the same keystone & lens-corrections and USM mask on each photo, not to mention the same crops. Plus you may notice that the sky is clear in these shots so I didn't have to worry about blownout clouds. In some the sky still was blown-out to hard blue-green but at least it isn't blatant & ugly as in the earlier examples from this cameraphone. But these came out somewhat better than the ones (at least of this scene) that I shot yesterday, though perhaps they would be even better with a bracket & HDR. But perhaps not. There's a certain something to be said for deep shadows in landscape shots. But the main thing is these BB9550 shots aren't that bad. It's not like I look at them and say "oh, the colors suck, they're just obnoxious" or "there's no fine detail, it's all smudged away by NR". Not even any real obnoxious barrel or pincushioning....it's not tilted strongly towards the green, the reds aren't orange or brown...if it wasn't for that slight overexposure in the sky, I wouldn't have any real complaints. I can think of *lot* of digital cameras that I've paid *hundreds* of dollars for, that didn't take shots this good. Of course I've learned a little something about photography and post-processing in the meantime, but still. Comparing jpeg to jpeg, this thing is a winner on several levels. Out of all the gear that I have had, it would be my first choice to use not my last, and I've had much-better cameras and much worse. It's simply too small, too light and to easy to carry and shoot with quite-decent IQ...I'd have to use a real camera to beat it IQ-wise not some POS 10-bit point & shoot like a G9 which would of course have a greater DR shooting raw but would still be saddled with poor color overall. I would need more than 3MP, which is hardly the case for me 99% of the time, and I've been harping on that for years. A wider FOV, possibly, sometimes, if I don't feel like shooting a pano and definitely need it, sure. A tighter FOV? Almost never. I just do not take a lot of zoom shots. Most of my shots are wide-angle. Quite often not wide enough, really. So I lose as much on the wide-angle as I lose on the zoom. And yes there's no way that this BB9550 can match a DSLR and a 28-300 or 70-300 lens, for long shots. But I'm not going to slip one of those in my pocket. And I'm not going to carry a DSLR and a good superzoom on me *all the time* just for that occasional long-shot. I'm pretty sure that 99% of the time I'll have my cellphone on me. And I'm just not going to carry an SX130 or S9100 on me all the time for the few long shots that I might want to take once or twice a month, maybe even every 2 months. And that's only when it's warm and dry and possibly even *light* enough to actually be out with a camera. It's the same logic that's driving iPad sales and killing notebook sales. It's 2011
