Hi, my name is Callum Buchanan and I am 2 years old. I currently live in Bordon, Hampshire, with my twin brother Mitchell, my mummy Dee and my daddy Scott. My mummy and daddy are originally from Helensburgh and this is where my grandparents and great-grandparents still live. I hope you enjoy reading my story.

I was born on the 20th May 2010 at 28 weeks and I weighed 2lb 4oz. I spent 3 months in special care until I was well enough to go home. At 8 months old I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Cerebral Palsy is a condition which affects different individuals in different ways. I cannot sit, crawl or walk unaided.

I have to do physiotherapy every day and attend hospital on average 3 times a month, this means I cannot attend nursery to play with my friends or keep up with my able bodied brother.

The reason for my fundraising is that I have a chance at a fantastic life changing operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy at the St Louis children's hospital in America. After the operation it will take me a little while to learn to walk with intensive physiotherapy. Hopefully the end result will be positive and I will be able to do all the things that I long to do and keep up with my brother.

My family and friends have lots of great ideas to raise the money and I hope that with all your support I can raise the £75,000 needed to fund the operation.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

“The doctors say he will go to a mainstream school as the cerebral palsy has no effect on his intellectual ability. It affects him being able to move and it’s frustrating for him because he knows what he wants to do, he just can’t physically do it. “It’s heartbreaking to see him getting so upset and I long for the day he can play with his brother and do the things a normal boy can do at his age. “It’s really hard but I take each day as it comes. His speech is amazing though and doctors say that’s probably because he is sitting about more than an average child and is able to take in what people are saying to him.” The family were inspired to take Callum to America for the operation after seeing the amazing effect it had on a little girl. Dee said: “There’s a little girl who Callum sees at the hospital and she is not long back from America where she had the same operation. “The difference in her is absolutely phenomenal, she is walking about and doing all the things she couldn’t do before. It really inspired us and we want the same for Callum. “We have been told that Callum is a suitable candidate for the operation and now we are trying to fund-raise.” The family have been told they need to raise a minimum of £60,000 but they say it will be closer to £75,000 once all costs are involved, including physiotherapy sessions he will need six times a week — which will add up at £68 per session.
