A Very Chinese Cookbook is co-authored by James Beard Award winner Kevin Pang and his father Jeffrey. They’re the hosts of America's Test Kitchen’s hit YouTube cooking series Hunger Pangs, which has amassed nearly 3 million views and began its third season in 2023.
A rare cookbook that centers around a father-son relationship, A Very Chinese Cookbook originated from a 2016 essay Kevin wrote in The New York Times Magazine. Titled “My Father, the YouTube Star,” the story recounts Kevin learning that his dad’s YouTube channel unexpectedly went viral. Jeffrey’s charmingly lo-fi Chinese cooking videos, which he began creating in earnest to teach his son family recipes, had over a million views. This came after years of father-son clashing: Two headstrong individuals — one proudly Chinese, both trying to fit into America — attempting to coexist under the same roof. Fast-forward to 2023 when Kevin and Jeffrey dug into their family history and joined up with a team of test cooks to produce a first-of-its-kind Chinese cookbook developed over the course of a year at America’s Test Kitchen’s Boston headquarters. Kevin, Jeffrey and the cookbook team created the recipes with ATK’s signature rigor: deeply researched, tested and tasted as a group, tweaked again and again until perfected.
Chock-full of tips, techniques, personal stories, and friendly ingredient guides, with over 100 of ATK’s rigorous recipes—and even a magic trick with fortune cookies—the cookbook is practical, personal, and very Chinese indeed.

Kevin Pang is the Editorial Director of Digital at America's Test Kitchen. A James Beard Award winner and a five-time finalist, Kevin has contributed to The New York Times, Vanity Fair, Esquire, and was a longtime food critic and features writer at the Chicago Tribune. He is the co-director of the critically acclaimed documentary For Grace, which premiered at South by Southwest Film Festival in 2015 and was acquired by Netflix. He lives in Chicago with his wife and son.
Jeffrey Pang is a retired businessman and cooking enthusiast. His YouTube cooking channel became an unexpected hit and was featured in The New York Times Magazine in 2016. He's now the co-host of Hunger Pangs for America's Test Kitchen. Jeffrey lives in Seattle with his wife Catherine.
