Zhuqing Li 李竹青 is a faculty member of Brown University. Her new book Daughters of the Flower Fragrant Garden: Sisters Separated by China’s Civil War (W. W. Norton & Company) tells the story of a Chinese family ripped apart by the political split between China and Taiwan after 1949.
Since publication, the book has been positively reviewed by major media outlets, including the New York Times Book Review, which has described the book as “riveting,” “absorbing,” and “exceptional.” The Wall Street Journal has noted that “the book’s gripping narrative reveals the devastating human cost of the Chinese Revolution and will resonate, in particular, with anyone whose family has been severed by political events,” while Kirkus Reviews has praised it to be “a poignant story of sisterly love and the search for self-knowledge in the face of considerable challenges.”
