Army Cadets - The Army Cadet Program focuses on physical activity and the outdoors
The Cadet Program
The Cadet Program provides opportunities for youth to gain valuable knowledge and skills that build confidence and help pave the way in a transition to adulthood. Cadets engage in varied and unique experiences, while developing competencies in leadership, citizenship, and physical and mental fitness. Offering positive youth development programs, sea, land and air cadet corps and squadrons are in communities across Canada.
Army Cadets build outdoor and leadership skills through participation in expedition activities such as hiking, climbing, kayaking, orienteering.
The Cadet Program strives to offer Cadets a safe, welcoming, and supportive program environment where all feel respected, valued, included and able to achieve their full potential.
1. Invite all Canadian youth – The Cadet Programs are open to youth aged 12 to 18 that are Canadian citizens or are authorized to reside in Canada. Programs are inclusive and celebrate the rich diversity within Canadian society.
2. Instill Canadian Military Values – Cadet Program training, direction, decision making, and behaviour are guided by ethics and values of the Canadian military. Values include loyalty, integrity, courage, inclusion, excellence and accountability. Cadets embrace and embody these values.
3. Develop Citizenship, Leadership, and Fitness – The Cadet Program offers cadets opportunities to develop skills and knowledge that: enable them to positively contribute as leaders in Canadian society, instill a lifelong appreciation of health and fitness, and support successful transitions to adulthood.
4. Balance Safety and Challenge – The Cadet Program offers activities and events that are challenging and safe. Cadets and their parents/guardians can be confident that the adults leading the program are focused on the development of youth and invested in their health and welfare.
5. Leave a positive lifelong impact – Whether cadets stay with the program for many years or for just a few weeks, it is hoped that their experiences were impactful, educational and are regarded (or remembered) as positive.
Cadets are supervised, administered, and trained by Cadet Instructor Cadre officers and non-commissioned members of a sub-component of the Reserve Force of the Canadian Armed Forces who, by the terms of their enrolment or transfer, have undertaken as their primary duty the safety, supervision, administration, and training of Cadets.
MORE ABOUT THE ARMY CADET PROGRAM
The Army Cadet Program is the oldest of the three cadet programs. It's main focus is on Adventure training. Through challenging outdoor activities such as abseiling, trekking, canoeing, GPS, orienteering, first-aid, camping and survival skills, it helps Army cadets gain valuable life skills that they will carry for the rest of their lives.
The Royal Canadian Army Cadets appeal to teenagers craving exciting outdoor activities where their personal limits as individuals and team-members will be tested. The hardcore outdoor-oriented will love the challenge! It's the experience of a lifetime! They will also learn to become outdoor leaders.
Army Cadets get involved in ceremonial military events and citizenship activities that allow them to connect to their Canadian heritage. They develop a great sense of pride and discipline through their involvement in a structured environment that allows them to hone their leadership skills as they grow older and they learn to care for younger cadets.
The Royal Canadian Army Cadet training program is divided into five portions: Green Star, Red Star, Silver Star, and Gold Star.
Green Star Training is designed to teach a new recruit the basics of cadet life. The Green Star course has a greater emphasis on drill than any other star level. All of the most common drill movements are taught in this course.
Red Star Training will complement the knowledge gained during Green Star Training. The Red Star course still has a great emphasis on drill, but it also adds on to the other aspects of the Star Training Program and introduces the cadets to the principles of leadership.
Silver Star Training will complement the knowledge gained during Green and Red Star Training but the emphasis will move from drill to leadership and teaching. Because those taking the Silver star course will be senior cadets, it is important that they know how to lead and teach.
Gold Star Training complements the knowledge gained during Green, Red and Silver Star Training. Gold Star Training is the most advanced training that a cadet can receive at the home corps level.
In addition to their specialty training, Army Cadets may become involved in other exciting activities like competitive Olympic-style marksmanship and biathlon, sports competitions, music training and competitions, cultural outings, volunteer community support, etc...
Canada represents the best playground for teenagers interested in the outdoors. We are the organization for teens and adults interested in getting out of the classroom to explore the planet the way it should be.
