On October 27, 2009, one of the most heinous crimes involving bystander effect occurred during a high school homecoming dance. The victim in this case was a 15-year-old girl (name unreleased).

Approximately ten men beat and raped the young victim just outside the gymnasium for two and a half hours while an additional ten people watched, laughed, and even took pictures with their cell phones.

While this was going on, the assistant principal had glanced outside his office window and noticed approximately fifteen unidentifiable men sitting around the scene of the crime but did not make any attempt to alert teachers or any other authority. He simply ignored them and went about his business.

By the end of this horrifying two and a half hour gang rape, the crowd had grown to more than twenty and nobody alerted the police or security guards that were on campus. The victim was found around midnight by someone leaving the dance. She was under a bench, half-alive.
