Rumors

Spreading rumors can be bullying. It can hurt other peoples feelings, and makes them emotionally confused. But we can help handle rumors. There is a four word question to throw the bully off guard. It's, "Do you believe that?"

Here are some role plays you can use so that you can practice and be prepared for rumors.

This is the WRONG way to handle spreading rumors.

Oscar: "Guess what?"
Fred: "What?"
Oscar: "I heard that every day your mom goes fishing in your neighbors trash to find your breakfast!"
Fred: "What????!!!! No she doesn't!!"
Oscar:(Laugh, laugh.) "She does!" (Laugh, laugh)

Fred didn't use the phrase and looked like a fool. He also showed his emotions and the bully had fun. Now here is a role play where Fred does use the phrase. He turns out to be the one who wins.

Oscar: "Hey guess what?"
Fred: "What?"
Oscar:  "I heard that every day your mom goes fishing in the neighbors trash to find your breakfast!"
Fred: "Do you really believe that?"
Oscar: "Well, no. I guess that it  wouldn't really be realistic. But... well... um... "

If they say yes here is what you should do:

Oscar: "Hey guess what?"
Fred: "What."
Oscar:  "I heard that every day your mom goes fishing in your neighbors trash to find your breakfast!"
Fred: "Do you believe that?"
Oscar: "Yeah, duh everyone does."
Fred: "While you can believe it if you want, I don't care."
Oscar: "Uh, yeah, um..."

Did you see that??!! The bully didn't know what to say when Fred used the phrase, "Do you believe that?" And it worked! See how that can work?
If you don't believe it, try it out for yourself!
