When I got tagged a while ago for the 16 Things game I wasn't going to do it. But, I've enjoyed the ones from my flickr friends so much I decided to give it a go for my second flickr anniversary. Many thanks to all for sharing your great work on flickr and for all the wonderful commentary you've left on my stream over the last two years. 1) I don’t do winter, rain, talus slopes or swamps. 2) My least favorite color is winter brown – all other colors of nature are welcome at all times. 3) I am definitely a night owl (I don’t do morning). 4) Coke is the breakfast of champions (I don’t like coffee). I don’t cook anything that takes more than ten minutes, so I really enjoy other people who enjoy cooking. Red wine and golden beer have colors I enjoy once in a while. 5) Definitely novelty seeking – I don’t like to do the same thing over and over except for Coke for breakfast. 6) When they ask at the restaurant, “Carnivore or herbivore?” its carnivore. I recommend the Carnivore restaurant near Nairobi – the zebra is tough but the ostrich is pretty good and the crocodile tastes just like alligator. 7) I don’t own a television, cell phone, iPod, watch, washer or dryer. Someone broke into my house when I lived in California – The policeman, walking into an empty room exclaimed, “Wow, they got everything!” But I didn’t have anything in that room. I hate to shop – malls especially give me a headache. Except for a few sentimental things, if I don’t use something in a year I sell it or give it away. For me, less is more. 8) I’m sure you all know I like to travel… I have had the great pleasure of visiting all seven continents. 9) I was in the Boy Scouts – I didn’t care much about merit badges and stuff like that, I just wanted to go camping. I still love camping out. I hate bureaucracy, commuting to work and waiting in lines. With one short exception, I always lived within ten minutes of where I worked. 10) I lived in the Middle East for three years and loved it. There’s nothing better than living in another culture to help understand your own. I saved up my money and retired when I was 39. I always enjoy it when other people remark, “You don’t do things the way other people do.” 11) I used to work for an oil company and belong to the Sierra club at the same time. My first master’s thesis project in involved solar energy, but I soon discovered the sun doesn’t shine much in the winter when you need it the most. The biggest challenge of alternative energy is how to store it when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing. 12) The major political parties don’t fit me. Neither do the minor ones. The politicians are always trying to convince people there is a free lunch somewhere, but there is no free lunch. 13) My guilty pleasure is buying books. I enjoy reading non-fiction: science, history, biographies, culture, economics, and politics. I’m fascinated by how things work and how they fit together. Indeed, everything is connected to everything else…. Life is difficult sometimes and you have to deal with it, but the world is so full of mystery and wonder. 14) I’ve got a poor memory for names, timelines, movies and novel plots, but I can remember just about exactly where I took almost every photo…. I never took a photo class, but learned by reading and experimenting on my own. My father and grandmother liked to take pictures and I have Kodachrome slide shots they took dating back to the 1950s that are still in excellent condition. My first photos were with a Polaroid black and white camera. The book I learned most from about photography from was Galen Rowell’s “Mountain Light.” 15) I’d much rather live near mountains, ocean or desert, but family and friends keep me on the prairie. Gotta get in some good uncle time with my nieces and nephews while I can – they grow up so fast…. 16) Go Lakers! PS: One of my friends sent me a photo from a trip where he said I looked like an astronaut. I scanned this and sent it to him and told him this was my astronaut look.... Taken 40 years ago at a summer science class I took. I was the only kid in the class tall enough to fit in the suit, so that's how I got my picture in the paper.
