Big Mama Bev & the Tailgate Ramblers Swing!
Big Mama Bev & the Tailgate Ramblers Swing!
This is a photograph that I took of one of my prized possessions in my music collection. This is an old LP that was recorded in the early 1970's by a group known as the "Tailgate Ramblers" featuring a performer known as "Big Mama Bev." The tracks were recorded in Detroit, Michigan for the Jazzology record label. This LP has been out of print for a very long time with little hope of ever being re-released on CD. It is also almost impossible to find this album anywhere and, if you do, the asking price is usually in excess of 60 dollars. Big Mama Bev was born Beverly Jean Hill in Birmingham, Michigan on January 6, 1938 to Charles Cecil Hill and Mae Bowling. She spent much of her life performing around the Detroit area in local nightclubs and other venues. She also appeared in numerous locally produced commercials. In the late 1960's and early 1970's, she performed with the legendary Al Hirt at the Al Hirt Club in New Orleans, Louisiana. She passed away in Detroit on November 26, 1978 from complications related to obesity. As far as I know, this is one of the only recorded examples of her vocal work. This is a very enjoyable Dixieland record.
Beef Pho
Beef Pho
Since the wife has joined an online cooking challenge (bit like a book club), we’ve been presented with numerous recipes and dishes to make each month. One such challenge was to produce the national Vietnamese treasure of Pho. Now being of Vietnamese origin myself I naturally wanted to partake, and do it the long way. When cooking a dish like this there is only one option with the broth – and that’s to make it yourself from scratch. Though it may take a few hours its definitely worth it. You can also keep it to use for other dishes. And as the broth simmered away, the wafts and smells only reminded me of Mama Hue’s kitchen. Though I must confess, my creation of this dish doesn’t even come close to good old Mama's.
