Brief History

There are many styles of martial arts in every country.  Seibukan Shorin-ryu has a long history of excellence, and a deep knowledge base.  Seibukan Karate of Hattiesburg is dedicated to teaching and preserving this authentic Okinawan karate.  Seibukan has been handed down for generations and has its roots in true mortal combat.  An excellent book about Seibukan and its history is Shorin Ryu Seibukan: Kyan's Karate - by Shimabukuro and Smith.

Students have their rank certified in Okinawa, Japan by Zenpo Shimabukuro, 10th degree black belt and the head of the Seibukan Shorin-ryu style.

Biljac Burnside began his study of karate in 1977 while a student at the University of Southern Mississippi. He has been to Okinawa, Japan several times to study with some of the most respected karate teachers of our day. With expertise in Seibukan, Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Kyokushinkai, and Kobudo, Burnside has experienced many styles of martial arts. BK has turned out many state, regional, national, and world champions. BK was opened in 1984 in downtown Hattiesburg on Front Street in what is currently Brownstone's restaurant. Students of Burnside are currently holding classes at Anatomies in Hattiesburg.
