Brief History

There are many styles of martial arts in every country.  Seibukan Shorin-ryu, the style taught at Burnside Karate (BK), has a long history of excellence, and a deep knowledge base.  The Burnside Karate dojo is dedicated to teaching and preserving this authentic Okinawan karate.  Seibukan has been handed down for generations and has its roots in true mortal combat.  An excellent book about Seibukan and its history is Shorin Ryu Seibukan: Kyan's Karate - by Shimabukuro and Smith.

Students at BK have their rank certified in Okinawa, Japan by Zenpo Shimabukuro, 10th degree black belt and the head of the Seibukan Shorin-ryu style.  BK is owned and operated by Biljac Burnside.  Renshi Burnside is a Rokyudan, 6th degree black belt, in Seibukan Shorin-ryu karate. Burnside began his study of karate in 1977 while a student at the University of Southern Mississippi. He has been to Okinawa, Japan several times to study with some of the most respected karate teachers of our day. With expertise in Seibukan, Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Kyokushinkai, and Kobudo, Burnside has experienced many styles of martial arts. BK has turned out many state, regional, national, and world champions. BK was opened in 1984 in downtown Hattiesburg on Front Street in what is currently Brownstone's restaurant. We are now located at 4900 Old Highway 11 South, Suites 5 & 6, Hattiesburg, MS
