Burnaby Mountain Open Wrestling Club

At Burnaby Mountain Secondary School

This is an open wrestling club for anyone who loves or wants to discover, the sport of wrestling. We cover freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling styles. When compared to a collegiate or university wrestling program, this is not an intense program.

Wrestling is a great way to lose weight or stay in shape. You’ll build your cardiovascular and muscular endurance. Your mind and reflexes will sharpen.

If you practice martial arts for self defense or train mixed martial arts, wrestling will improve your game and teach you how to control your opponent in a clinch (struggle at close quarters) or on the ground. Wrestling will also give you the ability to escape pins (controlling holds) on the ground, so you can get back on your feet.

The types of people who join the club are:

  • Complete beginners with little or no experience.

  • Current and former high school wrestlers.

  • Members of BC’s wrestling community. Former local, provincial, national, international, and Olympic competitors.

  • Practitioners of other martial arts such as brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, mixed martial arts, and sambo.

As long as you are respectful to other members of the club and follow safety protocols, we welcome anyone with any experience level.

Practice Structure

Practice is usually 1.5 to 2 hours long. Practice typically begins with a friendly game of indoor soccer or dodgeball to warm up. Then we proceed with basic bodyweight exercises like push-ups, lunges, and isometric exercises. Warm-up is then finished with light stretching.

Once warm-up and stretching is complete we move on to techniques. 2-4 techniques are covered each practice. Club members will get a chance to drill each technique with a compliant partner.

Towards the end of practice we’ll wrestle live. Members will apply the techniques covered in practice against a resisting partner.

A typical practice session has 4 to 10 people.
