You might wonder why there's always bunches of cyclists in the mountains like this. After all, you've probably seen us ride up the hill drenched in sweat, straining to keep moving, and wonder why we do this to ourselves. Or you might see a small skinny guy on a nice bike booking it up the mountain and figure that these mountains are reserved only for the super-athletic. Without your blood pumping and chemical messengers running all over the place and your body working at the maximum it can handle, you really won't understand. But, even if you are only barely able to make it up, the mountains that form a wall around Silicon Valley are heavenly. Home is on one side. The ocean is on the other. So you can ride to the ocean and back... or just ride to the top of a hill, look down and marvel at how much of a climb you just did, and then descend. You can ride along the rolling Skyline Boulevard, California State Route 35. There are dirt mountain biking trails and fireroads, for sturdier-build bicycles. And each climb and descent has its own unique character that, if you ride them often enough, gets burned into your brain. They are also quite fun for the other members of the two-wheeled crowd. But I think having the motor takes away a bit from the experience. Even if you ride a more rational motorcycle (as opposed to a Harley) there's a lot of engine noise. And, while you do burn more calories than if you were driving... you aren't putting in enough effort to get into a proper natural mind-altering state.

for my birthday...my brother took my husband and i out for dinner at blowfish (located at santana row in san jose). this was the first time i'd had a 'fried' sushi. it was delicious...but added on a few extra calories...that i burned off by walking about the plaza for a little bit of retail therapy. :)
