Abbasid The name for the second great Muslim dynasty named after the Prophet Mohammad's uncle Abbas. They revolted and seized power in 750 A.D. after the Umayyids ruled for 89 years from 661 A.D. till 750 A.D. 
Abu Bakr Reigned 632 A.D. to 634 A.D. He was the first Muslim caliph according to Sunni Muslims. The Shi'ite Muslims reject this and consider him the fourth caliph. Shi'ite Muslims think Ali is the first true successor to Mohammed. 
Adam The first man on the earth according to Islam. 
Ahl al Kitab "People of the Book." This refers to Jews and Christians who received revelations (various books) from God in the past. 
Akhirah The next life. 
alim A scholar in Islam. Plural is 'ulema. A scholar can be male or female. 
Allah The Islamic term for God. Muslims do NOT believe in the Trinity. There is only one God. Like none other. No partners to him. He did not give birth. He has no wife. He does not have a son. The greatest sin is to make partners with God, a shirk. 
Ansar These "helpers" were converts to Islam who lived in Medina and assisted the Prophet Mohammad and the Meccan refugees who came with him. 
aqiqah The Islamic ritual of welcoming a baby into the world. 
Arabic The name of the language spoken by the Arab people. People who are not Arabic learn some of it because portions of the Qur'an must be recited during Islamic prayers. 
Arkan al Islami The Five Pillars of Islam which are: 1-Declaration of faith, 2-Prayer, 3-Fasting, 4-Charity, 5-Pilgrimage to Mecca 
Asma' ul Husna The Most Beautiful Names of God. It is a list of 99 names which Muslims understand what God's nature is like. 1 الرحمن Ar-Rahmān The All Beneficent, The Most Merciful in Essence, The Compassionate, The Most Gracious Beginning of every chapter except one, and in numerous other places. Asr The prayer in the late afternoon. 
assalamu alaykum "Peace be upon you." This is the Muslim greeting of peace and the reply is, "Wa alaykum assalam," which means, "And upon you be peace." 
ataqullah "Be conscious of God's presence in your life." This is a common exhortation among Muslims and in the Qur'an. 
ayah/ayat "A sign." The term for a verse of the Qur'an (Koran). 
Ayatullah "Sign of God." The title of a major Shi'a cleric. Shi'a is the second largest sect of Islam. Sunni is number one in size. 
azan The Muslim call to prayer consisting of several religious statements. It is proclaimed five times a day by the muezzin. 
Azra'il The proper name of the angel of death, also known as the Malikul Mawt. 
Bani Isra'il The Children of Israel. 
Barzakh "The partition." The intermediate state in which the soul of the deceased is transferred across the boundaries of the mortal realm into a kind of "cold sleep" where the soul will rest until the Qiyamah (Judgement Day). The term appears in the Qur'an Surah 23, Ayat 100. They are either dreaming pleasantly or being tormented, based upon their faith and deeds based on how they lived in this world. 
Baytul Hikmah "House of Wisdom." A scholarly think tank established by Caliph Ma'mun in 830 A.D. in the city of Baghdad, Iraq. Most of the major translations of Greek texts into Arabic took place here also. 
Baytullah/Ka'bah "The House of God." One of the alternate names for the Ka'bab. This cub-shaped shrine in Mecca was built by Abraham but this is NOT mentioned in the Bible. All Musliims pray in the direction of this shrine out of respect for Abraham and to affirm monotheistic unity. Some say that Muslims did NOT always pray towards Mecca but to Jerusalem. 
Calif/Caliph/Khalif/Khalifa The title for the office of the spiritual and political leadership which took over after Mohammed's death. 
Hidayah Guidance from Allah. 
hijab A head scarf warn by women to cover their hair. 
Hijrah The migration of the Prophet Mohammad and all of his followers from Mecca, when Meccans became hostile to Mohammad, to Medina in 622 A.D. The Islamic calendar later gave this year as it's start. 
houris Special servants in Paradise. A beautiful virgin in Heaven for faithful Muslims. A possible lure for homicide bombers. 
Ka'bah/Baytullah "The House of God." One of the alternate names for the Ka'bab. This cub-shaped shrine in Mecca was built by Abraham but this is NOT mentioned in the Bible. Malikul Mawt The proper name of the angel of death, also known as the Azra'il. 
Mohammad The prophet and founder of Islam. Born in 570 A.D. and died in 632 A.D. at age 62. 
muazzin/muezzin The person whi gives the Muslim call to prayer five times a day from the minaret of a mosque. 
'ulema Islamic scholars which can be male or female. Singular form is alim. 
Wa alaykum assalam When a Muslim says, "assalamu alaykum," which means, "Peace be upon you," this is the Muslim response which means, "And upon you be peace."
