Miller's American Quilts: How to Compare & Value (Miller's Treasure or Not?)
American quilts are among the hottest collectibles, and this colorful new volume in the groundbreaking Miller’s Treasure or Not? series is an indispensable guide to this popular subject. Stella Rubin, a well-known dealer with more than 25 years of experience in quilts, identifies what makes one quilt worth more than another, and explores a wide range of designs from different eras: Colonial through the Industrial Revolution, Victorian to Colonial Revival and the Depression eras. On each spread, full-color photos of two quilts, related in style, technique, or intended use, appear on facing pages, surrounded by captions and notes highlighting each quilt’s “value features”—those factors, such as material, design, condition, and authenticity, that account for the item’s relative market value.89% (10)
my parents had to put down our cat milo today. I took this picture when I stayed over at my parents' house for my birthday. she seemed happy, content. I was four or five years old when I picked her out from a litter at my friend kirk's birthday party. her mom was orange and her dad was white. she was the only black cat in the litter, and she was the runt. I remember she was lying in the corner of the box where the kittens all slept. her mom was laying across one side of the box, and all the other kittens were meowing and climbing all over each other. but milo just lay in the corner, watching the kittens clamor for attention. I begged mom, and of course she said yes. I wore these little pink, leather ballet flats with a strap across the top that had a big bow on it. we had bought them so I could wear them to the party. the box was still in the car, so I put milo in the box to take her home. dad wasn't happy with me bringing home a new life that he and mom would have to care for, but you can't tell a child like me to give a kitten back. my brother and I named her milo after milo and otis. I've always liked the name, and even though it's a boy's name, I think she worked it. she lived a good life with us. she's lived in a lot of places and in each new place, she found something new to do. she really liked being a barn kitty when we lived in rural alabama. when my parents moved to their new house up by my grandmother's, milo couldn't go out unaccompanied because the dogs that run loose on the mountain would have killed her. so mom would sit outside with her, or they would take walks together. milo slowed down a lot since I've been in college, so she didn't need a whole lot of outside time. mostly she slept in her favorite spots in my parents' house, in the window seat or curled up on the rug by their bed. mom had this brass pitcher used for watering plants that milo loved to drink out of. she had a thyroid problem so she drank a lot. a pitcher holds more than a bowl. she got really cute in her old age, too. she lost all her bottom teeth (all the little ones, I mean, between her fangs), which I thought was adorable. and she started drooling when she slept, which was a little gross but still cute. she was mostly deaf too, in the past year her hearing started failing. but she was always a sweet, mellow cat. not feisty or moody like our other cats. certainly not as destructive as nitelite is or as noisy as snowball was. I know mom especially will miss her. the only animals our family has left live with me. cleo and nitelite are both over ten years old. that's such a terrible thought, I won't continue along this line. the silver lining is that these animals have had warm, loving homes. we gave them good lives, and I hope they were happy.Great Northern Plains Bracelet
prudent man agate & sterling silver I hunted high and low for this agate until a lapidary artist friend of mind purchased some slabs from the claim owner in Idaho and cut a bunch of it. I bought it in droves and have been hoarding it. I'm SO SO SO drawn to this agate. The pictures in this stone are mind blowing. They look like Idaho sage on hillsides with beautiful skies rippled with color. I get a little crazy about working with stones prospected in this state and Prudent Man is my all time favorite. I'm about to leave for Arizona on a business trip and I wanted to make myself a new piece of jewelry for the jaunt -- more specifically I wanted a bracelet. I pulled some Prudent Man cabs from my collection and set to work. The one on the left is a collectors cut since it features a full moon over sagebrush -- I know, I know, that's an example of perceived value on my part BUT the stone alone IS worth $152 in this setting. The other stone is a really beautiful, organic, elongated shape that looks SO interesting against the skin when this bracelet is on my arm. Very elegant. I knew that, while designing this piece, I wanted an atypical arrangement of stones which is why I picked such HUGE cuts to work with. I wanted the stones to wear lengthwise on the wrist -- something I don't usually see much of. The bracelet looks REALLy interesting on the wrist and it's gloriously heavy. The bison disc is a tribute to where I'm from, the Great Northern Plains. I've put the tip of a wheat sheaf on his back and slightly domed the compoenent. The other metal component is leaf shaped, also slightly domed, and reads: RUN FREE STAY WILD on one side and GREAT NORTHERN PLAINS on the other side. The backside of the full moon Prudent Man setting states: LET THE THUNDER OF THEY HEART ALWAYS LEAD YOU HOME In hindsight...I should have probably put THEE instead of YOU.....that's too bad. But I suppose every piece of jewelry should have a "Navajo Rug" characteristic to it... Right? Anyway, a hand crafted toggle closure brings the ends together. I'm wearing it right now. It looks and feels beautiful. Sometimes it's nice to treat myself...
