Public Access Defibrillator

Bubbenhall CFRs are pleased to announce that in partnership with West Midlands Ambulance Service, Bubbenhall Village Events and a local charity we have launched a Public Access Defibrillator at the Malt Shovel Public House in Bubbenhall.  In the event of a sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) where the CFR team are not available (either no CFR currently on duty or they're out on other calls) this defibrillator is available for use by the public.

What is a defibrillator?

Following a Cardiac Arrest the chance of survival decreases by 23% per minute. It is therefore very important medical treatment starts as soon as possible; a defibrillator can be used to deliver an electrical shock to someone's heart in order to attempt recovery from the Cardiac Arrest.  Please see this great page for more information on defibrillators.

What do I do if I need the defibrillator?

1. Dial 999 - ideally ask someone else to do this whilst you commence step 2 (if able).  An emergency crew will be dispatched to your location as soon as you have given the 999 operator your location and details.
2. Commence CPR - the 999 operator will talk you through how to do this if you do not know how.
3. If a CFR is unavailable and the ambulance crew are far enough away you will be asked to get someone to retrieve the AED from the Malt Shovel.  CPR is vital therefore this should not be stopped in preference for leaving the patient to get the AED - only retrieve the AED if there is someone else around to fetch it for you.
4. Once you have the AED open it up, lift the lid and follow the voice prompts; it will talk you through exactly what to do.

Can I get any training on how to use one just in case?

Bubbenhall CFRs will be running awareness sessions for Basic Life Support (covering CPR) and the use of the AED; we will be demonstrating the use of the AED that is located at the Malt Shovel via the use of a training AED that is safe to use in a training environment.  Please check back to this page for dates of the next sessions, if you would like to register your interest please drop us an email by clicking here.
