  • What Makes a House Feel Haunted? Have you ever had the feeling that you are being watched, that there is someone unseen in the room with you? Ever had the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and felt a blast of cold air around you? Heard foot-steps when there is no-one else in the house? What’s lurking in the shadows, in the dark recesses of your mind? Our senses tell us that something is wrong, something is about to happen, something is not quite right. We have a feeling; we see a shape out of the corner of our eye, a face at the window. We walk into an old house and we have a feeling of expectation, our senses ...

  • The mystery of the disappearing slipper  Every now and then I have my Mum over to stay for a few days. After one of her recent visits, it was time for me to take her home. Double checking I had all of her belongings, I helped her out to the car. It's a standing joke that every time she stays, no matter how many times we check , something is always inadvertently left behind.   Arriving at Mum's, I helped her into the house making sure I had all of her bags out of the back seat of the car. Anyone would think she had stayed for a week going by what she had taken with her. Mum started to unpack her bags, turning everything out ...

  • The Validity of Anniversary Investigations. The Charfield Rail Disaster 85 Years on. Last Sunday morning a small group of BSPRI members got up at 3am, braved the cold and went to the sleepy village of Charfield in South Gloucestershire. Why? I hear you say. Well on the 13th October 1928, it was the scene of the infamous rail disaster, where two trains collided and 15 people died. Since that date there has been a mystery about the identity of two young children who were amongst the dead and remained unclaimed. On the anniversary of the crash two children are said to walk hand in hand by the railway line. For some 30 years following the crash a mysterious woman in black was seen to visit the graves about once a year ...

  • Using the Problem Analysis Triangle to Assist Paranormal Investigation I suddenly realised that I was not alone! I don’t mean in the haunting sense, but in my thoughts about how we go about investigating the paranormal. I was sat in the audience at Seriously Strange at Aston University in September 2014, listening to Dr Ciaran O’Keefe, postulating the idea that we should adopt criminal investigation techniques for paranormal investigation. It was refreshing to hear him suggest that witness testimony and even more importantly, how we gather it, is vitally important in the investigation process. This should be combined with a thorough investigation of the location of the reported phenomena. The police adopt meticulous crime scene investigation, using the ‘golden hour’ principles to capture as much evidence as ...

  • The dangers of internet forums and the nutters that use them. The internet is a great place for us to share information and ideas with one another, to keep in touch with loved ones and friends and even meet that special someone. For those of us involved in paranormal research it is an extremely important tool as it puts us in touch with like minded people we would never have met and allows us quick exchange of information and ideas. Many members of the BSPRI first made contact with the group online. But as far as the paranormal side of the net goes it also has a dark side and this is a side I feel compelled to write about. Every now and then I like to  peruse the many paranormal ...

  • "I Hear Voices" - A recent investigation of Brean Down Fort Picture courtesy of HiggypopI never thought that I would say such a thing but this is what happened at our recent visit to Brean Down Fort. We were in the early part of the investigation in one of the ammunition stores, which are under ground. This particular one had an air duct which led to the upper level towards the cliff. I was stood in one corner with other members of the team stood in another corner. The sound echoed in this chamber and it was pitch black but for our torches. When people settled down and were quiet in the chamber I could hear the muffled sound of two people talking. Just so that I knew I wasn ...

  • The Funeral Ghost In June of this year we were sent a photograph to analyse. It was taken at the funeral of the photographer’s sister in 2007. It shows a remarkable image of what looks like the translucent shape of a full body standing close to the funeral carriage. The photographer stated that all the mourners wore black on the day of the funeral and he and his family could not account for what was in the image. The lower half of the body appeared to be legs. The upper half, some sort of transparent upper body shape. It could have been a reflection of someone wearing white but the photographer was adamant that nobody would have worn that colour to the ...

  • Photo Anomalies - an explanation by Wendy Issacs Many ghost hunting groups receive photos from people that suspect show paranormal images: ghosts, spirit activity, demons, etc. The truth is, convincing ghost photos are very rare, and most of the pictures can be explained in other ways -- sometimes quite easily. The photos I have posted in this thread are common examples. They do not show ghosts or other paranormal phenomena... probably. (I say "probably" because when we're talking about paranormal possibilities, nothing can by ruled out definitively. Yet, I think we can be 99.9% sure that they are not paranormal.) When examining photos for possible paranormal elements, we have to be very careful and sceptical. So many things can spoil the photographic image, which by its very ...

  • An Evening with Professor Ronald Hutton - The Great European Witch Hunt On 30th January Professor Ronald Hutton, Head of Bristol University's History Department, gave a talk at Dr Jenner's House. Professor Hutton opened by explaining that this study would be argued in his forthcoming book. It is a fact that modern western society by and large does not believe in magic, but where societies have believed in magic and the harming of someone by magic they have imposed the death penalty. The last definite case of someone being killed because of witchcraft was reported as being in Normandy in 1976. In England, the last reported execution was 1895, but as recently as 1984 there was a persecution of two women in Cornwall believed to be witches. In the developing ...

  • ASSAP Training Weekend 24/25 June 2017 The ASSAP Training Weekend has, over the decades, prepared hundreds of paranormal investigators to take on and handle cases. The weekend focuses on practising the skills needed to handle a client from start to finish including assessing a case, science and ethics, interviewing skills, analysing evidence and report writing. Important to note this is not a ‘how to’ guide for how to run a group vigil with vigil attached. There are many commercial events companies that offer such experiences. The ASSAP Training Weekend is a client focussed introduction to serious investigation. The weekend is also very friendly with group work and social opportunities galore. The course runs from Saturday 10.00am to 6.00pm and Sunday 9.30am to 5 ...
