When the coal industry left Big Stone Gap, VA the town experienced a decreased economy. Now, with national and state financial support, Big Stone Gap is increasing its local opportunities to the community and its efforts to showcase attractions to help support the local economy. Big Stone Gap has an immense amount of history and quintessential natural beauty of the Appalachian mountains to share. We hope The Big Stone Gap General Store & Cafe will serve the community by showcasing its beautiful culture while offering a spot for visitors to learn about ALL THINGS Big Stone Gap.
For years, the town has had a wonderful place for visitors to learn about its history and interact with local culture through venues such as The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, the HW Meador Coal Museum, John Fox Jr. museum, June Tolliver House, the SW VA Museum Historical State park, Gathering in the Gap, and Home Craft Days....just to name a few. And, Big Stone Gap was recently launched to stardom on the big screen with the movie, Big Stone Gap, which was based on a series of books written by one of its own hometown authors, Adriana Trigiani. This mountain community has been and is the home to many wonderful souls. NOW is the time to create a space for the people of Big Stone Gap to showcase the beauty and history of their town while sharing music, food, drink, and conversation with all.
The Big Stone Gap General Store & Cafe will reside in the historic 1900s Wise Printing Co. building that created Big Stone Gap's newspaper, The Post.
Now, the history of this beautiful building will include the General Store and Cafe, filled with music and traditional dancing of the Appalachian region (clog, flatfoot, and calling), theater, local artwork and crafts for sale. Healthful, locally sourced cafe selections will include COAL-fired pizza, salads, soups, and sweet treats. The building will also offer space for private gatherings, weddings, receptions, and workshops.
