24th Annual Rocket Campout at Doc Trotters Ranch

posted Oct 24, 2018, 11:50 AM by Madhuri Kopalle

When: Rocket Camp on Nov 9th, 10th and 11th 2018.

Where: Doc Trotters Ranch 12 miles north of Decatur.

What:  Launching model rockets for prizes and frying some turkeys for dinner

 Plan:

Once again the Aged Cheese (retired Troop 387 leaders going all the way back to 1993) will run the model rocketry portion of the camp using the same format as previous years.

1.  The aged cheese will descend upon Doc Trotter’s ranch on Thursday November 8 to police up the area, scare the longhorn cattle away from the campsite, pull the fully loaded troop (large) trailer to the site (someone else will have to pull it home), set up the kitchen for the Big Cheese and then enjoy some fellowship around a nice fire. Lanterns fired up when the troop shows at 8 pm Friday.

2.  Saturday morning Mr. Fonseca will offer the Space Exploration merit badge class.  It will involve a homework assignment to bring to the campout, building a wooden fin Estes or similar company model rocket, launching it twice, sitting in on a 2 hours class from 9am to 11am in the morning, paying attention and taking a test.

3.  Saturday afternoon after lunch from 1:30 to 4:30 or until we run out of engines there will have a launch contest (Closest to the pin).  A golf flag set in the middle of the field and the launch model rockets which are land closest to the flag win.  Prizes are awarded based on closest distance to the pin.  It is a lot of fun.  Distance is measured using a high tech laser range finder.

4.   Thanksgiving themed turkey fry dinner at the camp.
