REFRACTIONS (2011–12) c. 7 ½'
    For String Quartet

One of the principle foci for Refractions was on sudden shifts in musical character. Similar to a beam of light passing through a prism, the music’s trajectory is altered, sometimes drastically, at key moments throughout the work. In the midst of these seemingly chaotic transformations, gestures consistently reveal themselves throughout to serve, in part, as reminders of the initial source. This retention of material helps to create cohesion in a constantly evolving musical landscape while simultaneously alluding to the ultimate destination.
