My latest story is unfolding

I’m 2,000 words into my new story, Tattooed for Life. It is science-fiction and takes place in the near future. When I came up with the idea a few days ago, I let it gel. Now scenes, characters and situations are running through my mind constantly. I am having a blast.

Here is the beginning to the story.

Desistance, it sounds so simple and logical—until your time is up. In ten days, I will cease to exist. I must die so that someone can be born.

How do I know? Last night a burning pain jerked me from my dreams. I turned on the light and saw a serious of numbers tattooed on my wrist. I have no idea how they got there.

This morning I researched what the numbers mean. It appears that on the day I was born, a machine called a Gleaner assigned me the numbers 20741116. In reality, it is a date. The date I will desist. Today is November 6, 2074. I’m only 33 years old and I’m not ready to die.
