I was not optimistic about the possibility that Creed would be worth my time. There have been so many Rocky movies and one-off Rocky type movies, my expectations were low.  Directed by Ryan Cooglar, Creed stars Michael B. Jordan as Creed and Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa.

Plot Summary:  Adonis Johnson (Michael B. Jordan) never knew his famous father, boxing champion Apollo Creed, who died before Adonis was born. However, boxing is in his blood, so he seeks out Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) and asks the retired champ to be his trainer. Rocky sees much of Apollo in Adonis, and agrees to mentor him, even as he battles an opponent deadlier than any in the ring. With Rocky's help, Adonis soon gets a title shot, but whether he has the true heart of a fighter remains to be seen.

I was pleasantly surprised with the writing, directing and acting. Jordan has star quality, but Stallone carries the film. I now understand why he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. The script is just different enough to keep you wondering where the movie is going. Yes, the final fight scene is Rocky all over again, but everything prior to that was original and interesting. And, it was Rocky’s story that kept you wondering. They even had a brief shot of Cuff, or Link, his pet turtle from the original movie. What more could you ask for if you are a Rocky fan.

I will give it 3½ stars out of 5. If you liked Rocky, you'll like Creed. Rated PG13 for the violent fight scenes.
