"Staff of Rhah" Reader Comments

  • February 24, 2016 -  Good read! Truly disturbing crescendo of a finish.  ...set in a place called the "Land", which has a largely agrarian economy, protected within a "Barrier", and by wizards. The main character, Tipp, is a young man who wants to be a wizard, and the book follows his attempt to become one. The author successfully builds the beleaguered world of the "Land" and the character of Tipp, who wants so badly to succeed, into a heart-rending climax. I was caught up in Tipp's horrible dilemma, and the ironic twist at the end brought me to a "no, no, no!" emotion - well done!
  • November 13, 2014 - Hold on to your hats--or wands. ...Bruce Gaughran has created worlds within worlds for the fantasy lover. Young Tip battles inner and outer demons and monsters as he becomes a wizard, learns how to mind travel, goes .... no, wait, I won't give it away. This is truly a fine story for all ages. I read the novel and its soon-coming-out second part in its draft form, as the writer and I are members of the same writing group. I am happy to see it out in public now and hope it will get the attention it deserves.
  • November 18, 2014 - This story grabs you and won't let go!  The author develops his characters well, some with blatant dominance and some with careful thoughtfulness. The contrasts make the book stronger. The discovery process of "whom I am" for the main character is well thought out. The storyline shows a young man who has been given a goal that he fears he will not be able to accomplish. The actions taken by Tipp are deliberate and fearful at the same time. The consequences of his plans are not always known to him in advance. This places great demands upon his mental and physical strength. Along the way, you will meet characters that will always remain in the front of your memory. You will want the sequel(s) to be waiting for you after the first of Tipp's journeys. Put Bruce Gaughran on your favorite authors' list.
  • November 30, 2014 - Bruce does an excellent job in grabbing your attention from the first page
I could not stop reading it and read the entire book in one sitting. I rarely find a book that can do that for me. If you are looking for an enjoyable, easy to read fantasy book that is captivating and excellently written, then this book is a must read.
  • December 06, 2014 - I am rather new to the science fiction scene, but this story caught my attention. I imagine that every young boy dreams of growing up to be something or someone he admires, and Tipp is no different. This story follows his journey to become a wizard and the unexpected events that result in an outcome he never could have imagined. Full of interesting characters and challenging obstacles, this story captures the dreams and imaginings in us all. I look forward to the next installment.
