 ♠ WHO WE ARE

Broadway Coalition is comprised of individuals, businesses, and neighborhoods that envision Broadway Boulevard from Euclid Avenue to Country Club Road as a destination, a multi-modal transportation great street serving the adjacent neighborhoods, the University community, midtown, and Greater Tucson. Basically, we are Broadway and Broadway is us -- we live on it, we work on it, we shop on it, and now we are acting to preserve it.

 ♦ WHY WE'RE HERE

Plans have been proposed to widen Broadway Blvd to 150' (eight lanes) -- this would require demolishing over 100 historic structures and small businesses, further impede pedestrian connectivity between neighborhoods adjacent to Broadway, and "solve" a problem that does not exist to the extent forecast in the 20- year- old studies cited as justification for the project.

But -- where some see asphalt and the wrecking ball, we see opportunities to:

  • Strengthen community by bringing a variety of stakeholders together to determine a future for Broadway that works for all
  • Stimulate even more economic activity by putting buildings acquired for demolition into the hands of non-profits, arts organizations, and other community groups
  • Enhance the vitality of inner city neighborhoods, strengthen the urban core, and spur investment

 ♣ WHAT WE ADVOCATE

Our goals are achievable and reasonable:

  • Moving people safely and efficiently by a variety of means (bicycles, transit, pedestrians, cars, &c) within the current roadway alignment ("footprint")
  • Preserving an historically important destination in Tucson -- 126 structures potentially eligible for historic designation, representing works by seven renowned architects
  • Boosting the economic activity generated by the 115 businesses along Broadway that provides property and sales tax revenues to the City and jobs to the community
  • Promoting Tucson as a sustainable forward-thinking city that embraces multi-modal solutions that serve the entire community

We have written position papers on many key facets of this project, including:
