Broadband Modem Wireless Router

    broadband modem
  • The term broadband refers to a telecommunications signal of greater bandwidth, in some sense, than another standard or usual signal (and the broader the band, the greater the capacity for traffic). Different criteria for "broad" have been applied in different contexts and at different times.
  • Broadband modems act as gateways for high speed network access in the home and small business, facilitating a broadband connection through cable or DSL connection. Some broadband modems are beginning to incorporate Wi-Fi capabilities, replacing the need for an access point or router.
    wireless router
  • A wireless router is a device that performs the functions of a router but also includes the functions of a wireless access point. It is commonly used to allow access to the Internet or a computer network without the need for a cabled connection.
  • A networking device that is a combination of an access point and a router.  These devices are usually used in private homes where client PCs can be anywhere in the house (and thus use WiFi to connect), and the network is a broadband connection provided by an ISP.
  • Wireless routers are actually routers with Ethernet plus wireless access points so that they have both wired and/or wireless at the same time.

Today I have set up EV-DO Rev A. modem and wireless router in the village where my father lives to provide him more reliable connection than very expensive and slow GSM (GPRS) connection. Components used: - TP-Link TL-MR3220 wireless 3G router - Novatel U720 3G (CDMA EV-DO Rev. A) modem - 93 mm long wire from twisted pair (UTP) cable as 800 MHz antenna (green straw at the top of the modem) Most advanced thing for sure is antenna ;o) Despite how it looks it gives +4 dBi. I will replace it with something more powerful and directional when appropriate connector arrive from eBay seller.
Day 280
Day 280
Today was an unbelievable day. After 29 days of waiting, 19 days after the quoted time, our router from Sky finally shows up just as Andy and I are leaving for a lecture. When we get back we find we still don't have internet, because BT haven't connected our house properly, despite having the phone line connected 2 weeks ago and the internet activated 8 days ago and being promised everything has been tested and is working. So now we're waiting some more. Again. Up to 3 working days and that's just for diagnostics...
