A LIFE INVALUABLE Though younger, she ran mile upon mile through heat and sand, to be first on the beach. Skinny, browned by the summer sun, physical activity took the place of pursuits requiring money. Stubborn with a quick mind she matched wits with the man, who carried the same genes and the same heartache. The wailing siren was not a drill. They waited wide-eyed the safe return of rescuers. He came! The small town was a healthy mix of homelands. Everyone needed neighbours to get by. It was a good life in-spite of worldwide woes. The house built room by room, the washhouse a lean to, the middle yard an ocean of vegetables, chooks and wash lines propped. The dunny on the lane was dark, even when electricity arrived. The automobile traded for a radio, the horse and jinker much more controllable. She emerged into adulthood in the darkened streets of a city preparing to send its young men to war. With girlfriends, she danced through several jobs, made a new ball gown each Saturday and brushed off six proposals from a lanky local who kept her in precious nylons from the mill before joining up. The fifties saw her, wife and mother of two, living wherever country radio antenna provided work. Excelling in all things, she threw herself into family and community, building a wonderland of imagination with icing sugar, written word, costume and song. An open house to children unwanted continued with a new job in the city. In a life described as perfect, old scars simmered. Taught well by childhood she buried deep losses and trauma unspoken, coping as she had witnessed her father, closing doors permanently. Always giving, her life filled with work, family and others. Pushing through when needed, doing whatever possible, always in control. Grandchildren were born, were growing up, all seemed fine. Walls went up; blinds came down with everyone locked on the outside. Stiff and weary, he kept their life controllable and the world at bay. Caring, tending, coping and managing, isolated. Coaching her with every detail, on rare occasions they met with family in a random cafe in a random country town. Life became a marathon for him, their shrinking world ordered in ever decreasing time slots. As it caved in, the sum of all her fears tore at the new boundaries. The same stubborn wit lead her carers a merry dance. At the slightest gap, she did a runner heading back to the four walls she knew, out there somewhere. Days turned and kindness prevailed. Her voice melted hearts, as songs long loved flowed sweet and clear. Days turned. Unknown he kissed her good morning and kissed her goodnight and his dying heart revived. She did not realise in accepting his last proposal, she had won a heart of gold that would persevere long. As her final day dawned, a visitation, a ladybird came to say God speed.

Annually on Labor Day weekend, Old Sacramento, CA. closes the streets to all vehicles and covers the asphalt with dirt to bring back the early days of the city during the California Gold Rush. Many are dressed in authentic costumes of the 1800's era while parading along the still wooden sidewalks of Old Town. During their stroll they need to avoid the mock gun fight in the streets, the parade of wagons carrying visitor around the town, the re-enactment of the Pony Express riders racing through town, the U.S. Cavalry and other cowboys on horseback.
