  • Karol Józef Wojtyła was born in the Polish town of Wadowice in 18 May 1920
  • He elected in 1978 following the death of Pope Paul I who have been pope for 33 days only 
  • His was the second-longest documented pontificate; only Pope Pius IX served longer
  • He has been the only Slavic and Polish Pope to date, and was the first non-Italian Pope since Dutch Pope Adrian VI in 1522

  • He spoke the following languages: Italian, French, German, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Russian, Croatian, Esperanto, Ancient Greek and Latin as well as his native Polish 
  • He beatified 1,340 people and canonised 483 saints, more than the combined tally of his predecessors during the last five centuries

  • Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin (Frédéric François Chopin) was born to a French father and a Polish mother in Żelazowa Wola (1810), died in Paris (1849)
  • His last concert was held in London at the Guildhall
  • Hugh Grant played Chopin in the movie 'Impromptu' 1991
