Bach, Johannes-Passion, 2018

posted Apr 27, 2018, 4:52 AM by David Mitchell

St John Passion

On Good Friday, 30 March 2018, we presented our seventh Bach Passion. This time it was the Saint John Passion. The Evangelist was José Alonso Pizarro and Jesus was Ivan Ludlow. Soprano and altus soli were Auriane Sacoman and Jan Wouters. Pilate was sung Lodewijk Regout.
As ever, we were accompanied by an orchestra of Baroque specialist musicians, graduates of the Conservatoire Royale, playing at A 415 on their oboes da caccia and d'amore, on cembalo and viola da gamba. The orchestra was led by Katja Katanova. The chorus and minor soli were from Holy Trinity and our friends.
I felt this was our best-ever Passion performance. I was very happy to hear that many folk in the congregation agreed. See www.passiontoperform.eu.

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols 2017

posted Dec 15, 2017, 7:32 AM by David Mitchell   [ updated Dec 15, 2017, 7:38 AM ]

Here's our big festival of Carols again on Sunday 17 December 2017 at 19H. As usual we have an orchestra: 34 players this year. And a choir: 45 singers, including twelve wonderful kids. Solos by Lydia Stoddart, Ian White, Naomi Pitts, Eleanor Paine, and Amélie Lecoeuche.
We have a menu of carols in English, French, Netherlands, and German: Les anges dans nos campagnes, Stille Nacht, Slaap nu, mijn Jezuke, On Christmas Night All Christians Sing, and many more including my arrangement of the Hebridean Taladh Criosda, which we last sang in 2008. Maybe you can come along. It's free, but very popular. Get there early, if you want a seat.

Choral Evensong in memoriam Edith Cavell

posted Oct 9, 2017, 7:35 AM by David Mitchell   [ updated Oct 9, 2017, 7:41 AM ]

At 19H30 on 10 October 2017, we sing a Choral Evensong in memory of Edith Cavell, one of our HT saints. There will be a new set of Preces and Responses, which I've written for the event, commissioned by the Brussels Edith Cavell Commemoration Group. Like the Cavell Mass before it, it's loosely based on the tune Eventide (Abide with me). I've done it in the new Dorico software from Yamaha-Steinberg. If you're in the area, then come along and listen. It's a service, so it's free of course.
Preces and Responses are a standard part of the liturgy of Anglican Choral Evensong. There are similar liturgies in Catholic and Orthodox tradition, and their text goes back to the earliest centuries of the Christian church.

Mozart, Kleine Orgelsolo Mass

posted Apr 21, 2017, 5:42 AM by David Mitchell   [ updated Jun 26, 2017, 8:57 AM ]

At 10h30 on Sunday 26 June 2017 we have our fifth annual Viennese Mass, which is our annual cadenza before our singers take a well-earned break throughout the summer. This time we sing Mozart's Kleine Orgelsolomesse (Little Organ Solo Mass), written by Mozart at about the age of twenty. It is a gracious and elegant piece. Its name comes from the fact that much of the Benedictus is a bravura organ part. But there is an orchestra too, of course: oboes, trumpets, timpani, violins, and basso (cello, bass, bassoon). So we will be out in force. There will also be hymns with Austrian tunes by Haydn and Mozart. And the Mozart Ave verum. It's a Sunday morning service, so entry is free, of course. I warmly recommend it as worth a listen if you're in the area.
