Mozart, Kleine Orgelsolo Mass

posted Apr 21, 2017, 5:42 AM by David Mitchell   [ updated Jun 26, 2017, 8:57 AM ]

At 10h30 on Sunday 26 June 2017 we have our fifth annual Viennese Mass, which is our annual cadenza before our singers take a well-earned break throughout the summer. This time we sing Mozart's Kleine Orgelsolomesse (Little Organ Solo Mass), written by Mozart at about the age of twenty. It is a gracious and elegant piece. Its name comes from the fact that much of the Benedictus is a bravura organ part. But there is an orchestra too, of course: oboes, trumpets, timpani, violins, and basso (cello, bass, bassoon). So we will be out in force. There will also be hymns with Austrian tunes by Haydn and Mozart. And the Mozart Ave verum. It's a Sunday morning service, so entry is free, of course. I warmly recommend it as worth a listen if you're in the area.

Bach, Matthäus-Passion

At 19h00 on Good Friday 14 April 2017, our sixth annual Bach Passion. This year it's Saint Matthew: eight soli, three chamber choirs and two chamber orchestras, making seventy singers and players. The Evangelist is Joris Bosman and Christus is Ivan Ludlow. We are accompanied by an orchestra of Baroque specialist musicians, graduates of the Conservatoire Royale, led by Mme Katja Katanova. They play at A 415 on their oboes da caccia and d'amore, on cembalos and violas da gamba.

St Patrick Service

At the end of the last year, I wrote another new Communion Service. I wanted to include a "Holy Trinity" theme and a homage to the old saints of the Celtic churches. I came up with the St Patrick Service, based on the old Irish tune of Patrick's hymn to the Trinity, "I Bind Unto Myself Today". It's very simple. A monophonic melody line with organ (or piano or harp) accompaniment. About seven minutes in duration. We will sing it for the first time on the first Sunday in Lent, 5 March 2017.
If you want to try it yourself, you can download the St Patrick Service for free.

Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols 2016

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

At 19H30 on 18 December 2016, our wonderful annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. As usual, we have a great 35-piece orchestra, a cracking choir, beautiful soli, all lit up by candle-light. As usual we have done our best to find some great old carols from France and the Low Countries. Our newies this year are Venez, divin Messie, Kling, klokje, klingelingeling. We have a new carol called O Sweet Little Jesus written by one of our young choristers. And I've made a big new arrangement of O Holy Night. This wonderful song is (as you may know) a translation of the great French carol, Minuit, chretiens by the Parisian vintner Placide Cappeau and the great Parisian composer Adolphe Adam, who also wrote the ballet, Giselle, much-loved by Barbie aficionados like me. We will sing again our own triumphant version of Personent hodie. And there are lots of other golden oldies: God rest ye merry, Hark the Herald, Unto Us is Born a Son, Les anges dans nos campagnes etc. etc.
