Taunton Road

Taunton Road area of Bridgwater up to the Rhode Lane junction is part of the Westover ward.

Following the widespread flooding of much of the South West of England, the worse affected part of Bridgwater turns out to be the Westover ward.

Despite months of nurturing the environment in the vicinity of Brownes pond, the locals have seen their neighbourhood turned into a giant lake stretching from the Meads, through the overflowing Hamp Brook and the various rhynes and culverts. Some residents have been flooded and cut off and one person on a mobility scooter became stuck in the deepening water and had to be rescued. The Hamp Ward footpath alongside Morrisons was impassable-although access can be gained via the Canal path on a circuitous route.

Visiting the site   Cllr Brian Smedley said "Sedgemoor has been assisting with attempts to alleviate the situation and workers arrived with  sandbags to the affected areas. We have asked for adequate signage to be in place to prevent potential disasters in the unclearly de-marked areas. It's probably an appropriate time to look again at the long term plans for the Meads....."
