Violet Richardson Award - It’s What You Do That Counts!
-If you are interested in applying, the application can be found at the bottom of the page!
Do you know a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17 who volunteers in your community or school? Who sees challenges instead of obstacles? Hope instead of despair? If you know a young woman who believes in the power of volunteer action, then she may be eligible to win a Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as: fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment; and working to end discrimination and poverty. Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest. Soroptimist is an organization of women whose members volunteer in their communities, often working on the same problems that you do. Although we realize that volunteering is its own reward, we also know it feels good to be recognized for your actions. And that’s why we sponsor this award.
The award is named after Violet Richardson, the president of the first Soroptimist club in Alameda County, California in 1921. Richardson believed in personal responsibility and the motto, “It's what you do that counts.” She lived her life accordingly, as an active member in her community who was committed to creating opportunities for girls and young women. Soroptimist established this award to honor the memory of this unique woman and her dedication to volunteer action.
Recipients are eligible for a $ 250 cash award with a matching $ 250 cash award for the charitable organization of the recipient’s choosing.
Please find attached an application with flyer to post and share. The deadline to submit completed applications for the Violet Richardson Award is March 1, 2019. Please forward this information to any deserving young women you know who are dedicated to serving their community through volunteer work. Please feel free to contact Ms. Howard if you have any questions.
