Out of the Cold program
Out of the Cold program
This is Evan a young man that comes to our Out of the Cold program on Tuesday nights at Knox Presbyterian Church in downtown Toronto. I've been volunteering here for about 3-1/2 months now. Evan has a bit of a mental disability. A lot of the time most of what he says doesn't make a lot of sense. But, I know he's intelligent. From talking to him that's pretty evident. Another neat thing about him is that he has quite a good fashion sense. He put together this ensemble from second hand donations we have in bins in the basement of the church. Our programs is geared towards youth (under 25) who need a bit of extra support in life. We're open Tuesday and Wednesday evenings through the winter. We serve dinner and provide a place to hang out. They can play some video games, half court basketball and there's even three lanes of five pin bowling. Of course there isn't an automatic pin resetter... that's one of the jobs we as volunteers have to do. We have a food bank too. And if the kids need a place to sleep there are blankets and mattresses for them which they can use in the gym. In the morning breakfast is provided then they're out on their own. Normally we get in the area of 80 kids for dinner on Tuesday. Not too many sleep over. Less than ten. I've heard not too many people show up for dinner on Wednesdays. Perhaps that's because they're using the food they've picked up on Tuesday.

So inbetween jobs several years ago I worked in payroll at this place in Toronto that used to be an old school distillery that they were gutting and refurbishing into a new and swanky art centre/community/whatever (which turned out amazing, if not a bit polished). Anyhoo, I ended up getting a job as a graphic designer and my last day at the distillery I did no work at all...I just took my camera out and went absolutely nuts. By the way, all these pictures from this series are ALL film. No digital manipulation whatsoever...just good old fashioned cross processing or printing black and white film on colour paper.
